Hello World! Welcome Friends! Having a clean floor is probably one of the most important aspects of a clean, beautiful home. There are different varieties of flooring like asphalt, ceramic, brick, marble, and many more. While most floor types are easy to maintain, there are some that require certain special materials to avoid any damage. Keeping your floors like new is all about proper maintenance and cleaning.
Floor Types You Can Use a Mop On
Below are some of the common floor types used and what mop and cleaning technique you should use to clean them.
Hardwood Floor
- What Mop to Use: Microfiber Mop
- Recommended Cleaning Solution: Bona Cleaning Kit
- Be careful of: Not using water for cleaning the hardwood floor.
You’ll see hardwood floors more often in gym courts and outdoor spaces. One of the most important things to remember when cleaning hardwood floors is to never use water or steam mops to clean hardwood floors. Water will damage the hardwood floor and cause significant damage to the wood over time.
A microfiber mop is the right mop to use for cleaning hardwood floors. You don’t need to use water at all. All you need is a bit of a cleaning solution to mop the floor with it. Most hardwood floor makers recommend using Bona Cleaning Kit as the cleaning solution to use.
Porcelain Tile
- What Mop to Use: Sponge Mop
- Recommended Cleaning Solution: white vinegar, water, regular dish soap solution
- Be careful of: Cracking
Porcelain tiles exude a sense of class and luxury. They are extremely hard but can crack if you get careless so don’t be too rough during cleaning. That being said, one porcelain piece is easy to replace so if you do break one, you can easily replace it.
For the best cleaning solution, use ¼ cup of white vinegar, 2 cups of water, and 3 to 4 drops of regular dish soap. Mix the ingredients in a bowl and pour it in a spray bottle to use on the floor.
A sponge mop is one of the best mops for porcelain tile. They don’t easily become moldy and you can use them for long periods of time. Dampen the microfiber mop with warm water if you feel the need to.
Linoleum & Ceramic Tiling
- What Mop to Use: Microfiber Mop
- Recommended Cleaning Solution: water and dish soap solution
- Be careful of: Phenol Cleaners
Linoleum and ceramic tiles are actually different. However, the method for cleaning them is the same. Before mopping the floor, you need to sweep the whole surface to remove any loose particles.
For the cleaning solution, use half a bucket of water preferably warm water. Mix in it 6 to 8 drops of normal, over-the-counter dish soap and stir it up. Dip a bit of the solution on a microfiber mop and wring it properly so it’s damp and not dripping with water. After mopping, use hot clean water to remove any dish soap residue.
Never use Phenol Cleaners as a disinfectant cleaner. Phenol cleansers can be toxic and unhealthy to use especially for pets. If you still want to use them, make sure you follow the instructions on the product to avoid some of the hazards.
Laminate
- What Mop to Use: Spray Mop
- Recommended Cleaning Solution: PH neutral cleaner, water, ammonia, and bleach-free floor cleaner solution
- Be Careful of: Soaking the laminate floor
Laminate floors are almost identical to real wood in terms of looks. They too have some common cleaning requirements with hardwood floor types.
The most effective cleaning solution you can use is ½ cup of PH neutral cleaner, 4 cups of water, and 2 tablespoons of ammonia and bleach-free floor cleaner. Mix these ingredients together and pour into a spray bottle. Spray small sections of the floor and mop using a spray mop to avoid using too much water. Do not soak the laminate floor with water as it can seep down to the base of the plank tiles and result in damage to the flooring. Spraying avoids soaking the laminate with too much water and easily dries up.
Conclusion
There are different floor types that homes use and they are easy to clean and maintain. Just use the right mop and cleaning solution for proper cleaning to keep your floor sparkling clean. You also need to be careful of the things you should avoid that will cause damage to your floor.
