Hello World! Welcome Friends! Seasons are changing and with it can often come a desire to make some changes in our own lives. One of the most common ways that people do this is to make home improvements–decor changes, walls get a new coat of paint, new furnishing replaces the old, and new floors are put in.
This is not usually the most budget-friendly of projects, however. Small things add up quickly and big renovations often cost more than we thought. If you are getting the itch to change up your house a bit but are on a budget, is there really anything you can do?
Luckily there are most definitely some home improvement options available to anyone that can be done quite cheaply. So, if you want to freshen up your home, spruce it up for a coming season, but are on a budget, read on.
1. Replace Hardware
One of the easiest ways to help a space feel newer is to replace the hardware pieces. This can be cabinet handles or knobs, faucet fixtures, dresser or bureau hardware, doorknobs, light switch or socket plating, or light fixtures. Be sure to measure and count the size and number of the pieces you will need before you head to the hardware store, and get an idea of the color scheme or theme you want to go with so you aren’t as overwhelmed by the options.
Another hardware alteration you can install is new lighting. String lights, LED lights, and dimmable lights are all a great and easy way to change the look and atmosphere of a room.
2. Swap Out “Softwear”
Next up—“softwear”. This is all the plush surfaces in your home–beds, sofas, rugs, pillows, and linens.
Swap out your throw pillows on your couch or bed for something new. Pick a new rug for your dining room. Get a slipcover for your sofa, something to switch things up. Change the way you frame your windows by using double curtains, or by adding a sheer layer–whatever freshens up the space and makes you happy. Change up the towels, hand towels, and bathroom rugs. You can also switch up your bedding, comforter, and sheets, to move you into a new season.
As with most things, you can do as much or as little as you want, but even on a budget, swapping out the softer surfaces in your house could be a cheap way to spruce up any room.
3. Rethink Your Walls
Walls can be a little more tricky to change up, since you may not want to commit to completely repainting or papering a room just for a seasonal decor shift. But there are other ways of getting a new perspective on your walls if you are willing to think a little outside the box.
One of those ways is to paint or paper just one wall in a room, a statement wall that compliments the other walls but makes the room really pop. This is a great way to try out new looks without committing to changing the entire room. It is also a lot cheaper than redoing an entire room. Another way you can switch up one wall is with decals, which can really give you options for how to creatively design a room in a new way.
Another easy way to switch it up is to get some new or different wall art, new pictures, or a large painting, something really different that can alter the feel of the room in a way that feels fresh and fun.
Another option is floating shelves. Once up, there is no limit to the ways you can mix and match little decor items on them to spruce up the room. You can use candles, books, plants, knick-knacks, antique finds—there really is no limit.
4. Buy a Couple Plants
Speaking of plants…plants are a cheap and beautiful way to change up the feel of a room. There is something inherently fresh about plants and it goes to follow that they will give life to any room they are in.
There are a number of cheap house plants available, all with different levels of care, so research what will work in any given room. Do you have a low light or high light room? Will it have space to grow? Will you be able to care for it daily or do you need something more indestructible? A few common and beloved houseplants to get started would be plants like aloe vera, a braided money tree, a bonsai, English ivy, or lucky bamboo.
5. Rearranging and Decluttering: The Free Ways to Spruce up Your Home
Last on the list is an option that is completely free. You may find that this alone is enough to change up the feel of your house and more than sufficient for your home-renovating itch.
Rearrange the stuff in your house. Move stuff around in your bedroom. Create a new layout of the living room and dining room. Rearrange wall decor. Try out different smaller pieces of furniture in different rooms and see what you like. Move a bookshelf. Rotate the desk to face a different part of the room. Position couches to all face each other instead of focusing on the tv.
Finally, declutter. A clean, organized space is a great way to move into a new season of life. A place for everything and even if you like it more chaotic, consider a method for the madness. Give your whole house a good deep clean. Dust, wipe down the walls, vacuum around moved furniture, mop with lemon oil—your house will feel fresh and inspiring in no time.
