Hello World! Welcome Friends! Many of us will spend years of our lives working at a desk, from very early childhood when we begin school, through higher education, and into the workplace. Ensuring that we sit at the right desk throughout this time is essential to minimize posture and musculoskeletal injuries from occurring. The younger we are when bad habits and posture begin, the more difficult it is to change this, and the more damaging the injuries are.
Having the right desk available for your child from a young age is so important, but it can often be difficult to know what ‘right’ looks like. There are so many different types and brands of desks marketed for children that it can be overwhelming to choose which desk is the best. We have some tips for what to look for and how to shop.
Where to Start
We would recommend that you always sit your child at the desk before you buy it to see what the fit is like for your child. This can be difficult if shopping online, so we advise that you check the dimensions of the desk you are looking at online and find a similar desk in a store that you can sit your child at.
Posture when sitting at the desk is always the most important thing, ensuring that your child is sitting upright with their arms in the correct position. You can find more information about the correct posture for sitting at a desk if you complete an internet search about ergonomic seating positions.
In addition to ensuring you have the right desk, you will need to ensure that you buy the right chair for your child too. This should be the right height for the desk to ensure that your child is not sitting with their back bent over to reach the desk or with their shoulders raised to be able to reach the desk.
Type of Desk
There are so many different types of desks available for children, from height adjustable to small surface areas for storage reasons. It is always beneficial to ensure that the type of desk is suitable for what your child needs. If you are buying a desk for written schoolwork or crafts for a younger child, then a height-adjustable kid’s desk can be the best option. This will allow the desk to be increased in height as your child grows, and with the addition of a new chair can last for years, saving money on buying a new desk for each growth spurt.
For older children or when using a laptop or desktop computer, a fixed desk can be beneficial to avoid damage to cables and wires becoming trapped in the desk mechanism. Also, if you are confident that your child has reached their maximum height, there would be no need to adjust the height of the desk, and so a fixed desk could be the most cost-effective option.
Whichever type of desk you choose, check that it is suitable for your child before use, and periodically ensure that your child is sitting at the desk correctly.
