Hello World! Welcome Friends! So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and make your new home in the sun. The question is, apart from the well-known hot-spots such as Miami, which are some other great choices for your relocation? We’ve selected 7 of the best, below, and as a bonus, they all have beaches!
Nags Head, North Carolina
Looking for an outdoors, slightly boho lifestyle? Then Nag’s Head could be the right spot for you. It’s the best-known resort on the North Carolina coast, and there are a huge variety of water-based sports, including surfing, to practice. If you’re a lover of original arts and crafts, you’ll find plenty of galleries and studios to browse. At around 430 miles from NYC, 350 from Philadelphia, or 230 miles from Washington DC, expect to have plenty of visits from your East Coast friends. With an average of 209 sunny days per year and summer temperatures rarely surpassing 30 degrees, Nag’s Head has a very livable climate. Although the winters are colder, it rarely freezes, so it’s the perfect escape from the freezing north.
Destin, Florida
The north-western corner of Florida is known as ‘the Emerald Coast’ which says it all. Pristine white beaches, and the clear warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. And if you also like the idea of hanging out with celebrities, the town of Destin could be the perfect spot for you. Garth Brooks, Britney Spears, Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw, and Keith Urban, and several other famous names either visit regularly or have homes here. If you’re looking for a home in one of the best places to live in Florida, with a wealth of choices from traditional, characterful homes, to the most luxurious contemporary-style new-builds. Once you’ve found your dream home, you can enjoy adding your own touches and make it truly unique.
Rincón, Puerto Rico
If you’re looking for a complete change of lifestyle in a vibrant new culture, let’s head much further south, to Rincon in the natural paradise of Puerto Rico. Whether you’re a surfer, scuba diver, or a deep-sea fisherman, the spectacular coast is a great place to be. The beaches are world-famous. Rincon itself is a lively place, known to have some of the best beach bars in the world. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy fabulous local food (and maybe a mojito or two) while admiring the spectacular sunsets. You’ll enjoy 7-9 hours of sunshine per day and even in January, the average temperature is around 28 degrees
Tybee Island, Georgia
This small coastal community is only 18 miles from beautiful and historic Savannah but has an atmosphere all of its own. With a mild climate year-round, and an average of 212 sunny days per year it’s a perfect choice if you’re looking to escape from chilly northern winters. Homes here don’t come cheap, with the average cost of a home being $444,00, vs a USA average of only $231,000. So what do you get for your money? Tybee Island provides a tranquil, somewhat upmarket, suburban atmosphere. Although the town has a great selection of bars and restaurants, many of the residents are retired homeowners, and the place tends towards traditional and conservative (with a small ‘c’) values.
Santa Barbara, California
Just 90 miles from downtown LA, Santa Barbara is considered to be one of the best places to live in California. It has a lively youthful vibe, with a high proportion of young professionals. The majority of residents are tenants, rather than homeowners. Aside from the fantastic beaches and waves, you’ll be able to enjoy the laid back outdoor lifestyle and eclectic nightlife. There’s no such thing as winter in Santa Barbara, just a slight drop in temperatures in December and January – the skies are still blue and all you’ll need is a sweater! If there’s a downside, it’s that, on average, you’ll be paying well over a million dollars for a property. But as they say… location is everything!
Galveston Island, Texas
Galveston Island has a multitude of spectacular traditional buildings, so if you enjoy the feeling of being immersed in history, it could be a place you’ll enjoy living. It benefits from a humid, subtropical climate, and the temperature rarely falls below 37 degrees Fahrenheit. The beaches are wonderful, but when you want a change of scenery, head out to enjoy nature and get some exercise in Galveston Island State Park. Hang out or go for a run along the famous seawall. The town, while lively, is also family-friendly, with good schools. And it’s affordable. According to a local realtor “A 1,800 square foot, 3-bedroom, 2-bath home on pilings near the beach would run to about $250,000”, which could be considered a real bargain when compared with other beachside locations around the country.
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Although it’s landlocked and known for its arid climate, New Mexico does actually have some great lakes and fantastic options for your home in the sun. Choosing a base in a thriving, fun town such as Albuquerque can give you the best of all worlds – vibrant local culture, wonderful beaches, and stunning scenery. Also known for its spectacular hot-air balloon festival, the town has always been a magnet for artists and musicians which gives the area a relaxed and boho vibe. It’s also become famous as a base for some of the world’s best-known yoga teachers. The typical home price in Albuquerque is around $232,000 and the cost of living is slightly below the national average, so it’s a great option for families and those on a budget.
These are only a few of the many fabulous locations around the US where you could choose to base yourself and enjoy a wonderful lifestyle. Enjoy your search for the ideal place until you find your dream home. Then pack up, prepare to leave the gloomy freezing days of winter far behind you, and start your new life! Good luck with your move!
