Hello World! Welcome Friends! As we plunge further into the summer months, that means the heat is getting more and more intense. With that comes the blessing of air conditioning, of course – I know that I usually end up spending a lot of time indoors just to escape the blazing sun. I hate to imagine going without it during this time of year.
Unfortunately, it does happen plenty often that our units, be they central or in a window, end up breaking. What can we do when that happens? Well, if you’re in Ohio, specifically the Kettering area, I’ll be providing you with some options today.
Why Air Con Is So Important
While it might just seem like a nuisance on the outside, extreme heat can actually be quite damaging to our health. If you want to know more about this, you can start by checking out this page: https://www.who.int/health-topics/heatwaves. Once you’re done, I have more I would like to touch upon.
Many of us do not realize the destructive power that a heat wave can have, as they don’t seem as inherently bad as something like a hurricane or a tsunami. This isn’t an entirely incorrect perspective, but it is worth noting that high temperatures do have a significant death toll as well. In fact, these numbers are in the hundreds of thousands just from recent decades.
What does that have to do with this article, though? Well, plenty, though it might not seem immediately apparent. I would say the main thing is that it is important for us to shelter ourselves from this type of weather in one way or another. Having sanctuary inside the home is one method.
The other thing I will touch upon here is that it is surprisingly important for regulating the air quality inside of our homes. This is especially true for anyone who has a health condition that effects their lungs. As someone with asthma, I place a high value on the quality of air that I breathe in my home, so I was surprised to learn the role that air conditioning has in it.
Alongside that, when we don’t have to leave our doors and windows open, there are far less insects that creep in. I can’t think of many people who want bugs in their homes, even if they appreciate them on the outside. Some are even quite dangerous, such as some varieties of spiders.
There are benefits to be had in spaces other than our homes, too. One example is an office space. Employees are far more likely to be productive when they are comfortable in their environment. That means that keeping the building cool is practically a must.
When we get hot, it actually impacts our mood as well. Many people experience a quicker temper when the thermostat goes up. For better cooperation and collaboration, comfort is key.
The final notes I have today in this section return to the home as the center of the discussion. First off, we get better sleep when we don’t have to toss and turn all night in sweaty pillows or sheets. I know that I enjoy a weighted blanket, so being able to have one on during the warmer months is something I’m grateful for.
Our electronics also benefit from air conditioning, as it can help prevent them from overheating. If you play video games, you’re probably all too familiar with how fast some devices heat up. Protecting them is never a bad idea.
When to Seek Repairs
The answer to this one does seem rather obvious. When it stops working, right? Well, to some extent that isn’t wrong, of course, but sometimes there are signals that we should take action sooner. Either way, you could consider Baker Heating and Cooling in Kettering, Ohio or others like it for you if you are in the area.
The first sign I’ll cover today is if your unit begins to blow out hot air rather than cool. That is the opposite of what it is designed to do, so that’s a definite way to tell that something has gone wrong. What might be going on is a coolant leak or a compressor malfunction.
Next comes any strange sounds that the unit does not normally make. This could be a clang, a rattle, a groan – the possibilities are unfortunately quite limitless, so it can be hard to identify what precisely the problem is. That’s where expert opinion and advice comes in. Try to describe what you’re hearing to them, and when they come check they should be able to assess.
Along a similar line is any unusual smell. A musty or moldy scent, especially if it is pungent, is certainly an indication that you might need some repairs. Thankfully, it doesn’t always mean that you need to have it fully replaced. Some components may need to be, though.
Still, the musty scent in particular is one you should worry about. It is an indication that mold might be festering in your air conditioning unit, which is definitely not a good thing. It will send those fungal spores into most parts of your home and can cause health issues or worsen pre-existing conditions.
Finally, if you are finding that your home or building has high levels of humidity when it shouldn’t, you may be able to link that back to an issue with the air con. In all of these cases, it’s usually a good idea to call professionals in. While we can attempt to fix them on our own, given how vital keeping our spaces cool is, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
This is especially true now that we’re fully in summer. The temperatures are rising all around and it is getting quite uncomfortable to go outside in many places. Thankfully, we have our homes and offices to retreat into during these times. So, let’s keep it that way, and ensure that our units are working properly this year.
