Hello World! Welcome Friends! There is no secret product or formula you can use to get thick, healthy grass overnight. While this may be true, there are some tips and tricks you can use to make growing grass easier.
Ready to dive in and learn how to get the lush, healthy, green lawn you have always wanted? If so, keep reading.
Determine the Right Grass Type
You must understand the right grass type for your area. If you want it to grow quickly, you have to find more info about popular grass types and which one is suited to the local climate.
It comes down to two categories of grasses – warm-season and cool season.
Warm Season Grasses
This type of grass is best for areas with mild winters and hot summers. If you live in the southern or southeastern portion of the country.
These grasses will grow from mid-to-late spring and continue to grow through the early months of fall. In the winter, the grass will become dormant. Some examples of warm-season grasses that grow quickly include:
- Centipede grass
- Buffalo grass
- Bermuda grass
Each of these will germinate in between 10 and 30 days, providing the beautiful green lawn you want.
Cool-Season Grasses
The active growing period for cool-season grasses lasts from early spring to early fall. These grasses are best for the upper Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and Northeast.
Some examples of fast-growing cool-season grasses include:
- Kentucky bluegrass
- Tall fescue
- Annual and perennial ryegrass
All of these will germinate in 10 to 28 days.
The rest of the U.S. (not covered above) is considered a transitional region. In these areas you can use either warm- or cool-season grass. A good strategy is to use warm-season grass initially. After that, you can overseed with your preferred cool-season grass.
Tips for Planting Grass Seed
You have a few options when planting grass seed. You can consider hydroseeding, which involves an abundance of grass seed, water, wood fiber, and mulch. With the built-in fertilizer, this method helps the grass grow faster.
If you don’t hydroseed, you can do this yourself or hire someone. There are a few steps to follow to ensure your grass seed has the best chance of growing successfully.
Test Your Soil
Never plant without testing your soil. You need to ensure it is right for grass growth. This includes things like the right nutrients and drainage.
Get the Soil Ready
Preparing the soil for grass seed requires you to remove all debris. Also, use a rake to scratch the surface and a spade to remove any roots in the area.
Till the soil by hand or using a rototiller. At this point, mix the amendments, compost, or mulch. Make sure everything is smooth and level, with no clumps, when you are done.
Sowing the Seed
When you are ready to apply the seed, experts recommend using a spreader. There are several options with a drop or broadcast spreader being ideal for bigger areas.
If you are only seeding a small area, use a hand spreader.
Topdress the Soil
Now you need a layer to hold in the moisture. You can use peat moss or other materials. The topdressing will also prevent your seeds from being swept away in the rain.
Fertilize
Fertilization is essential. You can purchase a starter fertilizer at a home and garden store that is safe for seeds. Usually, this is one that has low levels of nitrogen.
If you add a fertilizer with excessive nitrogen, it can result in excessive weed growth.
Water the Grass Seed
A newly seeded lawn requires plenty of moisture. This is what lets the seeds germinate.
Watering just a few times a week is not enough. Instead, you need to use a mister and spray the area gently or run your sprinkler a few times a day for just 10 minutes.
After the grass has grown enough that you have to mow, water your lawn one to one-and-a-half inches a week. This will make the soil moist rather than soggy.
Tips for Laying Sod
If you want even faster results, then laying sod is a great option. This is because it’s the grass that has already been grown.
Having your sod installed is a ready-made lawn. However, this can be expensive and takes a lot of work.
You must install the sod as soon as you have gotten it because it will sprout on the pallet. Also, when laying sod, it must be moist. Be sure the layout is smooth with no gaps for the best results.
Caring for Your New Lawn
Once you have the grass seed down or sod in place, it is a good idea to make sure you are caring for it and maintaining it. By doing this, you can feel confident your new lawn will look amazing for the foreseeable future.
If you aren’t sure if you can handle this care on your own, be sure to contact the professionals. They are going to ensure you get the healthy lawn you want and deserve.
