Hello World! Welcome Friends! A lot of people are experiencing one of the coldest winters we’ve had in living memory and, based on recent records, things are going to get even colder. As such, we’re going to be relying on our heating a lot more, so should we expect our heating bills to start shooting up? With the following tips, hopefully, we can keep them under control.
Take Care of Your Heating and it’ll Take Care of You
Before you start going about any other means to make the home more energy-efficient, you should start with what’s at the heart of your heating bill: your furnace. Whatever heating system you have, investing in preventative maintenance and getting it checked at least once a year is crucial to making sure that it’s not slowly getting more and more wasteful, not to mention more likely to break down, as time goes on. Otherwise, it will burn up a lot more fuel to produce the heat that you need, increasing your energy bill.
Is your Home Thoroughly Insulated?
If you’re starting to experience a real cold snap in the home for the first time, it is worth asking whether or not your home is insulated. There are still plenty of homes that don’t have insulation, as well as state grants that could help you get it installed easily. If you have insulation in your roof, then you should check on it every now and then, too. Issues such as leaks or moisture or past pests can wear away at it to the point that you may as well have a hole in the roof. Be sure to inspect your insulation at least once a year.
Mind your Windows and Doors Too
If your insulation is already in place and not suffering any compromises, that still doesn’t mean your home is as well sealed as it should be. Air gaps can affect your doors and windows to a great degree. Even if they’re not particularly worn down, you can always look at replacements like the best vinyl windows to make them significantly more energy-efficient than your current ones. Good windows and doors don’t just keep the heat from escaping in the winter, they keep it from infiltrating the home in the summer, too.
Check the Radiators
One of the more regular heating maintenance tasks you should be doing is checking the radiators. While the boiler or furnace might heat the water that travels through the home, the effectiveness of your heating can be diminished by a build-up of sludge in the radiator. If your radiators feel cooler in some parts, like the middle, and flushing it doesn’t clear it up, then you might need a chemical flush instead to clear out that stubborn rust and dirt.
If the winters do, indeed, continue to get colder, then it is likely we’re going to see our bills rise. However, by being smarter about how we heat our home and protect it from the cold, we can potentially fight it.
