Hello World! Welcome Friends! You probably don’t think a lot about your hot water system. That is, of course, until something goes wrong. When you need to replace your water heating system, there’s one big question that you will have to answer: gas or electric? Understanding the difference between electric and gas hot water systems, including the pros and cons of each, is crucial to getting the right system for your home.
What’s Already There?
Unless you’re building new construction, your hot water system will already have its preferred fuel source in place. Therefore, the unit that you buy will have to work with that system. If, however, you are building new construction or considering changing your hot water system to a different fuel source, you should see what all the options have to offer.
While electric hot water systems are typically less expensive to install, electricity rates are much higher than natural gas or propane costs in most areas. Therefore, for a long-term investment, a gas hot water system is going to be the more affordable choice, as they typically make up the price difference in energy savings in about a year.
Energy Ratings and other Variables
Gas and electric systems also have different energy ratings and different methods for rating the various systems. Each still offers energy-efficient options, but you will have to look at the ratings and read their explanation to see what you are getting.
A gas system typically needs an ignition and a fuel source. Electric systems may also require the installation of a heat pump, additional electrical breakers or panels, or other elements. Therefore, while a base system may be cheaper in the electric variety, the additional requirements could add up and cost more in the end.
The Bottom Line
There is no single system that is better than the other when it comes to your water heating. The gas hot water system is more common, and typically offers better long-term savings, but electric systems are also becoming more popular. Based on what you have in your home and what you want from your hot water system, you can choose what is best for your next purchase.
