Hello World! Welcome Friends! After a questionable start to the year for most of us, the flowers are finally starting to bloom, it no longer gets dark in the middle of the day, and the sun is a stranger you’re happy to see once more.
Yes, it’s finally springtime. And with the end of winter, you can get those gardening gloves out of the drawer and start thinking about gardening once more. Or can you?
If you’re short on time or cash, you may not know how to spruce up your garden without investment you can’t afford. You know where we’re going with this… here are some easy tactics to spruce up your garden in 2021.
Start with Spring Cleaning!
Winter has a nasty way of leaving your garden in a bit of a (bare) mess. Before you start, we recommend doing a little bit of spring cleaning. For example, if you still have any leaves lying around, get rid of them. Clear borders and beds to bare soil, remove weeds from everywhere and use any compost you’ve collected as a natural fertilizer.
Note: Never put weeds in your compost heap, or there will be trouble!
No-Dig Gardening
You’ve always wanted your own veggies and fruits, but your existing garden set-up makes it nigh on impossible. Solution: no-dig gardening. Once you find out about the magic of no-dig gardening (yes, there is such a thing!), you will never go back to your shovel ever again.
It’s a fairly easy way to create a garden on land with soil that’s not very fertile, or a concrete space with no available dirt or grass. They’re incredibly cost-effective and you can get some amazing results; it’s a no-brainer, especially if you’re just starting out on your gardening journey.
Fix Fences and Sheds
Rotten or broken fences or sheds are very common in most household gardens. It’s easy to see why: most don’t use adequate protection (such as decent paint), and many ignore rotting wood until it’s too late.
But you’re not that kind of gardener! You know prevention is cheaper than a cure, so fix anything that needs fixing. Check that all of your wooden structures, like fences and sheds, have survived the winter onslaught. Give a fresh lick of paint where necessary. Don’t always stick to natural colors; bold can inject a slice of personality into your space.
DIY Bird Feeders
Birdseed is very affordable, and you don’t even need to buy a special feeder. Use an old tin of baked beans or soup, just make sure there are no sharp edges. You can also use a simple plastic bottle. Wash them thoroughly, paint them, and hang them where you’d like. Easy!
It’s a fantastic way to attract interesting bird species to your garden, with their behavior, sounds, and company really adding to the atmosphere. Sitting in your garden with the subtle and peaceful background activity of birds is very relaxing; try it!
Blitz Those Nasty Borders!
The job that every gardener hates, but it has to be done. Removing weeds and other nasties around the borders of your garden is a guaranteed way to add a few points to the health and aesthetic of your garden. It’s an annoying job, but the results make it more than worth it.
You want to remove weeds, get rid of begonias and geraniums (and any other dead annuals), and fertilizing as well as mulching is the essential final step. This not only helps your garden retain moisture and help grow any new plants and flowers, but will also limit weeds in the future.
Once you’ve finished this step, get planting as soon as possible. Roots can establish incredibly quickly, especially as the soil warms up during those early spring days.
Use Reclaimed Materials
People often complain that garden “stuff” is just too expensive. Even the basic materials, decorations, and furniture can take a huge chunk out of your budget.
There’s a secret you can take advantage of, however: recycled and reclaimed materials. They can be bought at reclamation yards, but this is often the priciest option. Alternatives include Gumtree, Facebook, and sites like Freecycle. Country yard sales are often also filled with interesting trinkets that might be of use.
Gardening Is For You (and no one else!)
Before you grab those gardening gloves, just remember this: gardening is for you, it should be enjoyable, soothing, calming, and should help you get away from the hustle and bustle. It should reduce stress, not increase it!
If you realize you’ve taken on more than you can chew, or you’re spending beyond your budget, stop and take a breather. Remember to enjoy the process, consider why you started gardening in the first place. It’s easy to let the pressure of having the perfect garden get to you, but just keep in mind that’s not the goal.
