Hello World! Welcome Friends! DIY home improvement hobbyists all over the country are breaking out their “to-do” lists before the holidays are here! From renovating landscaping, to building decks and repainting homes, this is the season of home improvement – and by doing your own work, you can save quite a bit of money on labor while still getting a great result.
But DIY home painting is not for everyone. While some folks can get fantastic results from a DIY painting project, others may not able to handle the long work hours and difficulties of painting a house on their own – and will likely require home professional painting services.
Never painted your house before, and not sure if you’re up to the task? Here are a few signs that DIY home painting is not for you!
1. You Want to Keep Your Weekends Free
Here’s one of the biggest reasons that a DIY home painting project may not be right for you. While it’s relatively trivial to paint one or two interior rooms in a single Saturday – especially with help – painting your entire house is a long, arduous and difficult process.
It takes around 120 man-hours to paint the average home – or about a full work-week for a professional painting team of three. You’ll likely require an even longer time to paint your home – so expect to spend most of your summer weekends covered in paint, hanging from scaffolding!
It may even take longer, due to poor weather conditions that prevent you from painting on a few weekends. You’ll save a couple thousand bucks by painting your own house, but losing your precious free time may not be worth it.
2. You’ve Never Painted a House Before
If you have never painted a house before, now is probably not the time to start – unless you plan on living in this home for quite a long time, and don’t intend to put it on the market. Chances are, you’ll end up with a decent result – but your work probably won’t look professional or “clean”, and will likely require some repainting or finishing in the future. This is a very good reason why you may need the assistance of house painters in Vancouver, or wherever you live. They can make it look just the way you want it to.
3. You’re Afraid of Heights
Unless you live in a ranch-style house, you’re going to have to get up on a ladder or some scaffolding eventually. For some people, this is no problem – if you already clean your own gutters and inspect your own roof, you likely have no issues with ladders and heights.
But if you don’t like heights, or you’re uncomfortable being up high, this is another sign that painting your own home is not the right choice for you.
4. You Don’t Have the Right Safety Equipment
If you’re painting a home that’s 2 stories or higher, you should have safety equipment such as properly-soled shoes, a fall protection harness, and anchor with which you can attach your harness to your home, to ensure that you are safe if you slip.
If you don’t have the right safety equipment, you’re putting your life on the line every time you step on your roof.
5. Your Home Is Large and Has Intricate Details or an Odd Shape
The larger your home it is, the more difficult it will be to paint. This is also true of homes with features like contrasting siding, extra details like storm windows, and other such additions. If your home is oddly-shaped, it may also be tougher to paint properly.

Kathryn, I won’t even tackle painting a small bedroom anymore. I don’t even need to keep my “painting clothes” as I don’t foresee ever not hiring a professional painter.
