Hello World! Welcome Friends! While owning a home offers a laundry list of benefits, it isn’t exactly cheap. From the mortgage, to the utilities, to maintenance, there are a lot of costs that homeowners are responsible for. There are also many hidden costs they you may need to prepare for during your home ownership journey.
One of the best ways to reduce these costs and save money is to save energy. In addition to saving money, reducing energy can also reduce your carbon footprint and do your part to help the environment. But how do you go about saving energy at home?
With that in mind, this blog post is going to go over some DIY energy-saving products to think about taking on in your home.
Install Efficient Appliances
One of the first projects you should consider if you are looking to save energy, is to install more efficient appliances. These appliances will use much less energy than your older models, and do just as good a job. You can pick up efficient washers and dryers, efficient fridges, stoves, dishwashers and several others.
Installing them is generally quite simple, and efficient models aren’t as difficult to find or as expensive as they once were. While these will cost more upfront, they will certainly pay for themselves over time, as you will be using a lot less energy to wash your dishes, keep your food cool and wash/dry your clothing. Also, there exist some rebates and incentives you could potentially utilize, as well.
Seal Air Leaks and Cracks Around Your Home
In order to save the most energy possible in your home, you need to seal it off from the outside. This can help you reduce your heating/cooling costs, and reduce a lot of energy. Let’s say it is cold outside, and you are attempting to warm your home. If you have leaks or cracks, cold air from the outside will be able to come inside.
This means you will have to run the heat much longer to reach your desired temperature. And once the desired temperature is met, it will soon become cold again due to the leaks. As a result, it is a good idea to take a walk around your home and see if you can identify any drafts. These will often reside near windows or doors. If you encounter them, it is a good idea to seal them with caulk or another sealant to ensure that your home has a strong seal.
Use a Programmable Thermostat
One of the most noticeable changes you can make in terms of energy efficiency is using a programmable thermostat. These will allow you to automatically adjust the temperature in your home on a schedule, to keep you from constantly tinkering with the temperature. So instead of having to leave your heat on all day so your home is warm when you get off work, you can simply program the thermostat to start blasting the heat 20 minutes before you arrive.
Many of them are quite easy to install, and will certainly provide you a ton more benefits than your traditional thermostat. Some can even learn your preferences in terms of heating and cooling over time. Perhaps best of all, these can often be used and controlled remotely from your phone or other mobile device, as well.
As you can see, there are several different DIY projects that you can do at home to save energy. Whether you decide to install efficient appliances, seal any air leaks, or use a programmable thermostat, they are sure to help you reduce your energy usage and costs.
