Hello World! Welcome Friends! Every year, hundreds of thousands of homes are destroyed or damaged by natural disasters. Here are just some of the ways in which you can defend your home against the wrath of mother nature.
Types of Natural Disaster
Natural disasters come in all different forms. Some of the most common examples include:
- Storms
- Hurricanes
- Floods
- Tornados
- Earthquakes
- Sinkholes
- Wildfires
Recovering from Disaster
If your home is struck by a natural disaster, the first thing you need to do is rebuild. There are professional services that specialize in the likes of flood damage restoration. Repairing any damage is important – even if your home is only mildly damaged, this damage could get worse over time and could make your workplace building weak against future disasters. There are lenders that you can approach for funding and local charities that may be able to help offer money.
Taking Preventative Measures
While you may not be able to prevent natural disasters from occurring, you may be able to put in place measures to prevent damage. This could include seismic upgrades to protect your home’s foundations against an earthquake or installing concrete pilings to withstand a hurricane. With floodproofing, there are multiple measures you can take including wet floodproofing (protecting the interior from water damage) and dry floodproofing (protecting the exterior from water penetration). With wildfires, there are similarly multiple defenses that you can consider including metal flashing on roofs and fire-resistant doors. Even when it comes to mild storms, there could be important measures to take such as removing any nearby weak trees that could fall during a storm. Such measures are particularly important if you live in a high-risk area (homes in such areas may already have defenses put in place, however this may not always be the case).
Insuring your Home
Insurance won’t prevent damage, but could help to ensure that you’re financially compensated in the event of damage so that you can afford repairs. If you live in a high-risk area, you may find that regular home insurance rates are too high or you may even be outright rejected. Specialist local insurers may be a better option as they may be able to offer more personalized coverage to your needs at a cheaper rate. Alternatively, you could choose to go without insurance, instead saving up money in an emergency account reserved only for natural disaster repairs.
Prioritizing your Own Safety
You and your family’s safety is much more important than preserving the structure of your home. In the case of areas that are prone to hurricanes and tornadoes, homes should always have storm cellars to escape to. In the case of areas that are prone to wildfires, it’s essential to make sure that there are suitable fire escapes throughout the property (a staircase leading down from a loft is much safer than a ladder). Shelters and escapes can even be built to be used during floods and earthquakes.
