Hello World! Welcome Friends! Online learning is growing as a viable education approach for K-12 and college students. Consumer Affairs noted that about one in four students attend postsecondary, degree-granting school entirely online. By the time they reach college, more than half of students are taking some distance learning courses. With these changes to the learning environment, homeowners may need to consider how their homes can suit their students’ learning needs. If you follow these tips, you can discover ways to improve your online learning environment and customize it for your student.
Remove Clutter
Getting rid of clutter is a continual process that you may have to perform multiple times per year. Clutter accumulates when you have more stuff than you have places to put it. To start on your online learning space, you should remove all clutter from the room. Perform a quick sort of the clutter, determining what to do with each item:
- Keep
- Sell
- Relocate to another room
- Donate
- Throw away
If you can, remove the furniture from the space as well. An open area will give you the room to consider the best layout, instead of sticking to what you already have.
Consider Obstacles to Learning
Productivity doesn’t happen in a vacuum, which means that you may have some obstacles to clear as well as the clutter. Obstacles to focus often come in the form of distractions, which can affect any of the senses. If the room has a strong-scented room freshener, you may notice that your ability to focus changes when it permeates the space. Similarly, loud noises or bright lights at certain times of the day can make it difficult to pay attention to online high school electives. Write down a list of potential problems, so you can make a layout that minimizes them.
Create an Effective Layout
An ideal learning space has an effective layout that works best for the person spending time in it. Consider the needs of the student and their ability to access comfortable seating, equipment, and other tools for learning. The learning space should minimize the need for repetitive movement without making you feel boxed in. Placing important devices, such as headphones or tablets, close to the desk will make it easier for students to access what they need without having to move around. Positioning the desk perpendicular to a window can allow in some natural light, without creating immediate glare or constant distraction.
Select Furniture and Equipment
The position of the furniture and equipment can significantly affect a student’s ability to be productive throughout the day. In most cases, students will need a desk and a computer or tablet for their daily lessons. The desk should be appropriately sized and comfortable for sitting, with adjustable seating. Screens should sit at the student’s eye level, so that they do not have to tuck their chins or strain their necks to see what they are reading and writing. Install multiple light sources, including overhead lighting, spotlighting, and wall sconces. Equipment should be minimal, focusing on what the student needs for the regular school day.
Add Storage and Décor
Although learning spaces should not be clutter catchers, it is a good idea to add storage and a small amount of décor to the area. Wall décor makes the space feel welcoming to the student, without creating too many distractions or obstacles in keeping the room tidy. Storage is a key component. Drawers and folders can help students keep files in order. Drawer inserts give space to organize smaller items, such as staples, paper clips, pens, or pencils. Cabinets and closets provide a steady place to store infrequently used devices, such as printers or reference books.
Finding the right learning environment can be done from home without having to invest in a complete remodel of the space. By decluttering, removing obstacles to focus, and creating a layout that meets your online learning requirements, you can ensure that your student has everything they need for a great educational experience.
