Hello World! Welcome Friends! Finding the home of your dreams is kind of like searching for the perfect partner. It often takes time, but once you find “the one,” you know you’ll always have warmth, comfort, and a safe space from the chaos of the world.
Fortunately, finding the perfect home is often easier than finding the perfect partner. With a little patience, forethought, and planning, you can find the home that suits your needs and personality best – no bad dates required.
1. Be Flexible
You may be in love with a specific style of home, but that doesn’t mean it’s what you’ll end up choosing. A lot of factors play into the home buying decision, including budget, availability, location, school districts, and more. So, you’ll want to look at a variety of homes.
Display homes are perfect for those considering building their home as they give you an in-depth experience that allows you to picture yourself in similar surroundings. As you explore these and other homes, it’s important to be open to new ideas. You might be surprised to find yourself loving something completely different from what you envisioned.
2. Do Some Research
There’s more to buying a home than just loving the way it looks. The surrounding community and the local amenities are also things to consider. What’s the neighborhood’s walkability score? Where will you turn to get your late-night take-out fix? Are the neighbors friendly? If you have kids, what kind of reputation do the schools have?
Take time to research the home and community you may soon be calling home.
3. Know Your Budget and Financial Situation
Before you even begin your dream home search, you need to figure out how much you can comfortably afford to spend each month. With this number in mind, visit several lenders to get pre-approved for a mortgage. Having a budget and pre-approval in hand when searching for a home lets you know how much you can afford and helps you stay within your price range.
Note: Just because the bank approves you for a $300,000 mortgage doesn’t mean you should look for a home with a $300,000 price tag. In fact, if you do, the monthly payment may be more than you can comfortably pay. Purchasing a home at the top of your approval limit may leave you resenting your dream home when the mortgage strains your wallet.
4. Consider the Future
Ideally, you’ll want to stay in your new home for at least five years. This will give you time to pay down the mortgage and build up equity. As such, you’ll want a home that can grow with you. For example, if you plan to start a family, you’ll want a home with an extra bedroom or two. If your job can be done from home, a home office may be in order.
No one’s saying you should buy a five-bedroom home right off the bat if you’re single, but giving yourself some wiggle room to grow will ensure you remain happy in your dream home for many years.
5. Look Beyond the Flaws
The home you choose may not be the one you envisioned, but cosmetic things like wallpaper, paint, flooring, and fittings can be changed to your liking. Look for a home that’s built well, and change what you don’t like after moving in.
Finding your dream home is kind of like searching for the perfect mate – it takes time and patience. However, if you keep the above tips in mind as you look, you’ll surely find your dream home in no time!
