Hello World! Welcome Friends! Sharing our homes with critters and creepy crawlies may not have been something we planned for, but inevitably, the ones that benefit from coexisting with us will make their way into our lives at some point or another. The next step is, of course, making plans to get rid of the unwelcome guests – and that’s easier said than done. With the help of an Atlanta pest control company, we look at effective control measures to keep your life as pest-free as possible.
First Up: Prevention is Better Than Cure
If we openly provide food and shelter for pests, we shouldn’t be surprised when they move in. Many of the things we need to do to prevent this from happening are almost instinctive for most of us: wiping kitchen counters to remove food residues, for example, or ensuring that garbage bins are properly closed.
However, we can do much to make our homes inhospitable to pests through physical exclusion with the help of mesh coverings for openings like doors, windows, and vents and by ensuring that unwanted chinks and openings are dealt with promptly. It’s also worth keeping homes (including attics) and gardens free of clutter that can offer shelter for undesirables.
By the way, if you keep pets, effective control of parasites like ticks and fleas prevents them from targeting us. So using a veterinarian-approved product keeps both us and our pets comfortable.
Taking Control
In the home, we usually use physical or chemical control to get rid of unwanted visitors. Physical controls range from the very basic swatting of an annoying insect to using physical traps – the old-fashioned mouse trap is a good example. It’s safe to say, however, that seeing one pesky insect or mouse around the house could well mean that there are many more, and effective control will mean rooting out the population completely.
We often turn to chemicals for help at this point, but unless we go for full fumigation, the chances are good that we won’t succeed in our goal, leaving surviving pests to multiply and take the place of the ones we managed to kill.
Many of the natural remedies one reads about aren’t that effective, or they make a lot of mess. For instance, ants won’t cross a line of ground cinnamon, but who wants cinnamon stripes at every doorway and on every windowsill?
To control pests effectively, it’s good to know their habits and their life cycle. This helps us to know what we’re up against, and how likely we are to achieve effective control without professional help.
How Knowing Your Enemy Helps You
Ants in the home can be a huge annoyance, but we know that they live in nests in the ground. We only see the workers, and the queen easily replaces any that die while out foraging.
Using ant poison bait, or better yet, ant bait traps that protect us from the chemicals they contain, ensures that workers do the job of wiping out the nest on our behalf. With the queen dead, the entire colony dies out.
Cockroaches, on the other hand, don’t have this kind of formal organization. They lay eggs just about everywhere and can be very hard to get control over without professional help.
In closing, pests that keep coming back after you thought they were wiped out, and heavy infestations of certain hard-to-control pest are a sure sign that you need a bit of help and advice, not only in controlling the pests already in your home, but in ensuring that they don’t return anytime soon.
