Hello World! Welcome Friends! The arrival of summer may stir up mixed emotions for parents. On the one hand, you get to spend so much more time at home with your kids. On the other hand, you have to spend so much time at home with your kids. Luckily, there is no need to stress. Check out these tips for keeping your home (and yourself!) calm, cool, and collected when the heat hits record highs.
Plan Your Family’s Meals in Advance
Summer’s bounty includes plenty of bright, fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables (and special treats like drinks, ice cream and popsicles!). Setting aside some time at the beginning of the week to plan out meals means less time in the kitchen slaving over a hot stove and more time enjoying simple and refreshing seasonal meals. Trade in the kids’ peanut butter crackers for fresh veggies with homemade dip and fruit kebabs made with watermelon, grapes, pineapple, and mango.
Simplify Your Cleaning Routine
The last thing any child or adult wants to do on a gorgeous summer day is be stuck inside scrubbing toilets or mopping floors. At the same time, with kids home for the summer, it is easy for messes to pile up quickly. A simple solution that everyone can get behind is to employ the 10-minute rule when cleaning up your home. Set the timer on your phone for 10 minutes, blare some cleaning-friendly tunes that the whole family can groove to, and get to work. Everyone can manage 10 minutes of cleaning, and the more bodies that get into the action, the more areas that are covered.
Go Low-Tech
Too much screen time is enough to make everyone in the house grumpy and lethargic. Keep your family’s energy and spirits high by getting outside of the house to enjoy the sunshine, summer activities, and fun with friends and family rather than sitting on the couch. You and your kids will feel less stressed and more connected, and you can plan fun activities together that the whole family will look forward to and treasure. If you should decide to stay inside, keep the shades drawn during the hottest parts of the day — it will inevitably stay cooler and less humid.
Prep Your Home for the Season
We’ve all heard of spring cleaning, but what about preparing your home for the summer? There are a number of things that you can do at the start of the season that will make summer run more smoothly. Clean out your gutters, scrub up your front door and walkway, repair the sprinklers, scour the birdbath, straighten out your flowerbeds, and make sure that the grass in your yard is growing evenly and healthily. Taking these steps at the beginning of the season will ensure that you can enjoy your summer to the fullest, from start to finish.
With a little bit of preparation and a focus on simplicity, you can beat the heat of summer, literally and figuratively!
