Hello World! Welcome Friends! Tung oil is a very versatile and useful substance, but there are certain myths surrounding it that you will want to be aware of. The more you learn about this type of oil, the more effectively you will be able to use it. A lot of people end up misusing tung oil because they don’t understand the fundamentals of it. When you get the correct information, it will be much easier for you to use this oil to your advantage when doing woodworking of any kind.
Tung Oil was Invented In the 1960’s
There is a common myth that tung oil was invented in 1965 by Homer Formsby, when in reality it has actually been around for thousands of years. In fact, this oil dates back all the way to 500 B.C., when the Chinese began using it for the purpose of waterproofing wood. While Homer Formsby may have introduced his patented finish, he was certainly not the one to invent this oil altogether.
Evaporation Causes Tung Oil to Dry
While it is true that tung oil hardens over time, it is not because of evaporation. A lot of people think of this type of oil as “drying”, when that really isn’t the case at all. This type of oil hardens more so than drying. Linseed oil hardens in much the same way that tung oil does, which is why it’s known for being so durable and long-lasting.
BLO is Superior to Tung Oil
Some people still seem to believe that BLO is far superior to tung oil, but it just isn’t. The fact is that these two things are completely different, so there is really no sense in comparing them to each other at all. You will find that while BLO had a number of added metal compounds, tung oil is completely pure (at least most of the time.) Another difference between the two is that BLO can mildew while tung oil cannot. Pure tung oil doesn’t yellow over time, while BLO most certainly does. This is a huge misconception people have, and it’s important that you know the truth.
Tung Oil Should Never be Used on Food Surfaces
It’s commonly accepted by many people that tung oil should never be used on surfaces that are used in preparing food, but the truth is that it really doesn’t matter. As long as you are using pure tung oil, there is no harm whatsoever in doing this. There is no risk whatsoever to those who have nut allergies, despite what many people have come to believe over the years. No matter what food allergies you may or may not have, tung oil won’t affect them.
Tung oil can be an incredibly useful substance for those who enjoy woodworking, but you will need to be able to separate fact from myth.
