Hello World! Welcome Friends! Seasonal changes are necessary for us to keep ourselves active, but these climate changes bring some troubles with it.
These temperature changes not only affect home residents but also creates an impact on household goods. These changes are the cycle of life, and there is no need to worry about these easy-going troubles. You need to know how the temperature will affect your house, so you can deal with it without creating a mess.
As the temperature changes, the door and its locks start creating problems like door and lock jamming, losing color, and much more. Having information about these problems helps you to find out the solution.
In this article, we will discuss the problem of doors in winter and summer so you will be aware of it before it happens.
Effect of Cold Temperature on Door
Loose Screw
In the winter season, the humidity of the environment decreases significantly. This reduction in moisture content leads to the shrinkage of the wooden door that is not entirely sealed, so the screw at the hinge gets loose.
In a few cases, the screw of the lock or doorknob also becomes loose. A change in humidity ranging from 15 to 20% has a drastic effect. Thus this slight change in moisture content causes shrinkage of the door that results in the inappropriate fitting of the door in the frame. Change in environmental moisture does not affect the doors and windows of glass and aluminum.
Solution of Loose Door Screw
This door problem is quite irritating, but the solution is easy and quick.
Tighten the loose screw, or if the hole of the screw widens, then use glue to seal it, then drill it again and hold the door with a new screw.
To avoid this problem, you can apply moisture-resistant solutions on both sides of the door. The moisture does not release from the wood and thus saves the door from contraction.
Wood Door Rot
Wood rot is a common wood problem that might create damage to the door and the wooden roof. Rot develops on the surface where they get moisture and food.
In winter, due to frequent snowfall and rain, wooden doors somehow absorb moisture. Due to enough moisture content and availability of food in the form of wood, wood rot develops over the door.
An evenly painted door with no space for water absorption does not get affected by rot. Once rots develop on the door the structural stability of the door becomes reduced significantly. The rotted area is the most favorable place for many unwanted insects.
Solution
Proper caulking and painting protect the door from rot. If the damage is very extensive then you can replace the affected piece. If the damage is over a large surface the only solution is to change the door.
Change in Door Appearance
In very harsh temperatures, the color of the door fades, and it appears chalky. This is the problem of both hot and cold weather.
Extreme environmental conditions like heavy rain, sunny weather, and wet and cold weather ruin the door appearance. The exterior coat of the door helps save it from moisture, so due to the damaged exterior coat, the door becomes more prone to breakage.
Solution to Cope with the Problem of Fade Door
The door is the first impression of your house, so select the paint wisely. Before choosing door exterior paint, look for the weather condition. Light reflective paint is highly recommended in those areas where rain falls very frequently.
Frozen Door Lock
During winter, the most frustrating event is the ongoing snow and rainfall that make the lock faulty. When exposed to snow, the tiny water drops get inside the lock through a keyhole and freeze there creating a door issue.
Due to this freezing, the key becomes unable to turn, and it becomes difficult to unlock or lock the door.
Solution
You can use a hairdryer to melt the snow inside the lock. It is the easiest and quickest solution to this problem. You can also use a firelighter for this purpose but be very careful. You can check how to stop the lock from freezing to avoid this annoying issue.
Effect of Hot Weather on Door
Like cold and dry weather, hot climatic conditions also create some negative impacts on the functionality of doors. Here are a few problems that might occur with doors.
- In summer, the humidity content in the environment increases, so the door expands and does not fit the frame.
- In summer, the climate remains dusty most of the time, this dust moves inside the keyhole, and the oil produced in our finger creeps inside the lock and clogs it.
- If any of your home’s doors are exposed to sunlight, it may fade rapidly which affects the inner structure of the door.
The Bottom Line
Due to climatic changes, the door (wooden door) is severely affected, and this damage becomes severe if you do not notice it. To save the doors from harsh weather there are plenty of ways. Painting the door from time to time is the best solution to protect the door from moisture and rots.

It’s great that you talked about how hot climatic conditions could also create some negative impacts on the functionality of doors. I noticed that our door is starting to become quite difficult to open and close, so I think we need to have it repaired soon. I do not know how to repair it on my own, so I should probably hire a door repair expert.
