Hello World! Welcome Friends! The truth is, no matter where you live within America, educational disparities are there. Instead of accepting the situation as inevitable, many parents are choosing to take responsibility for their children’s education. If you are among that growing number of parents questioning the educational establishment, but you don’t know where to turn for alternatives, rest assured there is one to fit your family’s needs.
1. Private Schools
This is the traditional alternative to public schools. You can find programs that are affiliated with religious organizations or those that have developed specific curriculum or learning programs. Two of the most popular and well-respected programs are Waldorf and accredited Montessori schools. With decades of success, these schools have shown that a different approach works well for many children.
2. Homeschooling
Many people never really considered this option until recently. However, homeschooling has been growing as a movement in the United States for the past several decades. Just like with any educational method, it may not be the right choice for every family. There are many different approaches to homeschooling. Some families choose to replicate the structure and schedule of a traditional school day. On the other end of the spectrum are families that choose to “unschool”, allowing their children to learn through everyday life experiences. Regardless of the approach you take, homeschooling can be an effective way to meet the individual needs of each student when parents are able to spend the time and devote resources to making it successful.
2. Online Schools
Online education is another option. It takes the responsibility of curriculum planning and development out of parents’ hands, so there is slightly less control over the content. However, it is incredibly flexible and offers you the ability to take learning pretty much anywhere you want to go – as long as there is internet service. Some public school programs have implemented alternative online programs for their students.
4. Charter Schools
Somewhere between public and private schools, charter programs are increasing in popularity. They are accountable to the public and funded through education dollars. At the same time, they have increased flexibility with curriculum and standards. Parents must choose to enroll their children in charter schools.
5. Military Academies
Although there is a common idea that these are for kids with behavioral problems, military academies actually offer educational experiences that allow children to explore their independence while learning about responsibility and authority structures. They are often a stepping stone to a career in one of the branches of the military.
There are many alternatives to traditional public schools. Depending on your children’s learning style and your schedule and budget, you can find one that works for your family.
