Hello World! Welcome Friends! Cushions are a fantastic way to bring personality and pull your design scheme together. They add color, texture and an edge to any interior scheme — while providing comfort and support to a cozy living space. However, it’s not always an easy task to select the right cushions for your home; from deciding on the colors to complement an existing scheme, to the number of cushions to put on display. Here, we’ve curated a guideline to help you put all the pieces of the puzzle together and create a look that works for you.
Add a splash of color
There is something exciting and enticing that color brings into an interior space. It easily lifts the room’s mood and accentuates its overall look. The right cushion colors instantly grab ones attention; and can easily turn your sofa or bed into the room’s focal point. When selecting your cushions, get inspiriting from existing colors in the room, and select ones that can either seamlessly blend in or stand out. For example, if you have bold decorative accents and other soft furnishings and want them to stand out, make sure to pick cushions in subtle tones. Similarly, if you’re working with a neutral backdrop, then allow yourself the freedom to play with bold and vibrant covers for a casual and eclectic look. Experiment with bold patterns on small size cushions for a bit of an edge; while keeping large cushions in block colors to tie the look together.
Play with various textures
Different textures and fabrics can really amp things up and add instant warmth and comfort. Velvet, faux fur and wool are fitting for evoking a timeless and sophisticated look often found in contemporary and traditional interior settings; while cotton-linen blend offer a light and laid-back look that adds extra charm in modern homes. Mixing different textures create a sense of luxury and give the impression of a room that has evolved over time and been loved and lived in along the way.
Bring in different sizes and shapes
If you are looking to add depth and visual interest, having the same cushion shapes and sizes can look monotonous and too clinical. Don’t be afraid of using large cushions. While they can be overwhelming if used excessively, a big cozy cushion can be used to evoke warmth and they’re extremely practical. Variation is essential, in the sense that it offers some form of artistry and intrigue to the scheme of things. In addition, different sizes give you the opportunity to create different cushion arrangements. For instance, 55cm x 55cm large cushions work well as outliners; creating a base for which you can comfortably sit slightly smaller 45cm x 45cm cushions. Small 30cm x 50cm rectangular cushions are excellent front or center pieces.
Work with the seasons
What makes throw cushions the most attractive soft furnishings is that they are relatively easy to switch up and quickly update your décor. They can be used to reflect the changing season, and bring in style perfect for the time. For example, light colored cushions in cotton-linen blend are perfect for spring — they lend an airy and flirty look that complements casual and pared-down interiors. You can always take these away and bring in warmer tones and velvet or wool textures when autumn and winter sets in for a cozy and sophisticated flair. These simple changes keep your design scheme looking fresh and current year after year.
Pick the right cushion insert
The trick to choosing the right cushion inserts is to understand the look and style you are trying to go for. For plump filled cushions, you may want to go for an insert that is 5cm bigger than the cushion cover; while an equal size of the cushion cover and insert gives you a flat result. In addition, different inserts offer different qualities. For instance, polyester cushion inserts look less plush but have a non-allergic, odorless and easy to wash material. On the other hand, down and feather cushion inserts offer plushness and squish but are difficult to clean and are quite expensive.
