Hello World! Welcome Friends! uPVC is a common material used all over the country for doors and windows. It is inexpensive, relatively versatile, and can be painted pretty easily. It is also often used for the door furniture on uPVC doors. It is so common that many people find themselves asking whether or not they can paint their uPVC door handles.
What Kind of Handles Can You Get on uPVC Doors?
A uPVC door can have a range of different types of door handle. They may have nickel, stainless steel, or chrome door handles, or they might have a uPVC door handle. It often depends where in the home the door is, i.e., if it is a uPVC front door versus a uPVC garage door or conservatory door. It often is also down to aesthetics. Many people will make their door furniture match their door frames, for example.
Before you decide to paint your door handle, it is essential that you determine which material it is made out of.
Is It Worth Painting a uPVC Door Handle?
Most DIY jobs are relatively costly, and uPVC painting is no exemption. If you’re hoping to change the appearance of a door, painting the uPVC door handle is only really worth it if you’re already doing uPVC painting elsewhere. So if you plan to paint uPVC doors around your home as well as the handles, then it is worth doing.
However, if you’re planning on buying all of the necessary equipment and taking all of the necessary time to paint the door handle, you would likely be better off simply purchasing a new handle for your uPVC door. A high-security door handle will only cost you around £40, and you can try to fit it yourself or hire a locksmith to do so for around £50. This will likely be cheaper than buying a sprayer of uPVC paint or a pot of paint, masking tape, tarp, sandpaper, a brush or roller, etc., and will definitely be quicker.
Can uPVC Door Handles Be Painted Properly?
The short answer from Revamp Spray is yes. uPVC door handles can 100% be painted and given a professional finish. However, they do require some work. They can only be painted with specifically formulated paints that are designed for hard plastics. The paint you use may also require you to use a primer – you should be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions for guidance on this.
Before applying even the primer, you will need to fully prepare the door handle in order for the paint to properly adhere. If you have a metal handle, you will need to use metal spray paint in order to get the professional look. It is also wise to add a powder coating to metal spray-painted uPVC doors in order to improve the finish and make the paint job more durable.
Will Painted uPVC Door Handles Last?
Painted uPVC handles should last a reasonably long time so long as they are done properly. In order to ensure that painted uPVC door knockers and handles last, you should:
- use a primer when specified by manufacturers
- leave each individual coat to dry
- prepare the door handle adequately
- apply a powder coating
According to Sketch Spray you should also be sure to remove the handle from the uPVC door surface when painting to ensure you can completely coat the entire piece. If you are going to paint uPVC doors around your home as well as the handle, you should still remove the piece from the uPVC front door first.
How to Paint uPVC Door Handles
If you are going to go ahead and paint uPVC doors and exterior door handles, here is a step by step guide to getting your uPVC front door looking brand new.
1. Remove the Handle From the Door Completely
You should first of all unscrew your uPVC handle from your door. This will allow you to better clean and paint the piece. Most handles are simply attached by two screws in the centre.
2. Clean the Handle
Handles are touched a lot, so get yourself a damp cloth and hot soapy water, and wipe down the handle. You are looking to remove any grease, dirt, dust and debris that may have collected on the handle over time.
3. Sand the Handle
Sanding is an essential part of preparing your handle for painting, as it is with painting uPVC windows and doors. Use fine sandpaper (sometimes called light sandpaper) and gently sand the entire surface to improve the likeliness of the paint adhering later on.
4. Prime if Necessary
If your chosen paint requires primer, you should add it now. Do so with a roller to avoid leaving brush marks, and leave it to dry completely before continuing.
5. Paint Your Exterior Door Handles
Once all prepped and primed, you can now begin to paint your pieces. You should use a roller to avoid brush marks, and should use long strokes along the handle in one direction. Once the first coat is on, leave the paint to dry. Whilst the paint dries, you can continue with other handles or perhaps paint your uPVC windows or door frames!
6. Apply the Second Coat
You will likely need at least two coats of paint on the handle. So once the first is dry, go in again with your roller and add a second coat. Leave this to dry and then either add another coat or go in and add your powder-coated top coat.
7. Reattach
Once you’ve powder coated the piece, and all of the layers are dry, you can return it to your front door. Simply screw the handle back into the door and voila – a new look. This new painted door handle should be fairly low maintenance, it may need wiping every now and then to remove grubby fingerprints, but generally when you paint a uPVC handle, it will last a while.
