Hello World! Welcome Friends! Technology has advanced so much so that we are now able to buy anything from anywhere with just a click on our devices.
The pandemic that rocked the world has also influenced our buying culture as more people now prefer to shop online rather than going to a physical store.
Gardening has always been therapeutic for most people but sometimes, most of us may not have the time to go to the store to get that flower or tree we have been admiring. Luckily, now with just a click, we can order for our plants and wait for them to get delivered to our front porch without us having to move an inch.
This is just so convenient and stress-free. However, getting the delivery isn’t all that is important. What do you do after you get the delivery? Do you just take the plant straight to your garden? If you can’t answer these questions correctly, then you have to keep reading.
In this brief yet informative read, we will be discussing what you need to do once your plant gets delivered to you. Let us get right into it.
1. Remove the Plant from the Box
This sounds quite obvious and you are probably wondering why it is even on the list. Well, newsflash, some persons may just leave the plant in the box probably because they are too busy to unpack it. But, you can’t afford to do this except you want your purchase to go bad right inside the box.
So, do the following immediately you get your package:
- Open the delivery box and take the plant out carefully. You may want to do this in your bathroom or outside. This is because the contents might have gotten messy during shipping. This is especially true if you ordered a potted product.
- Check the product for damages. If any is found, take pictures there and then. These pictures will be the proof you need to either get refunded or get a replacement.
- Remove the packaging from the plant. If you may have to ship plants at any time, you may save some of the packaging. Also, check if there is any hidden packaging like growth mesh and ties. These can confine the plant’s growth if they aren’t removed.
- Read the care instructions or label that came with the package. Also, do not throw it away as you may need it at some point.
2. Quarantine It for 1 to 2 Weeks
Your new plant may have bacteria, insects, or fungus on them. This is why you need to shop from a reliable store. Although the chances of the product coming with insects or fungus are still there, it is greatly reduced when you shop from a reputable store. You can visit https://plantedpot.com/shop/ to learn more on how to shop from a reputable plant store.
Therefore, you have to quarantine the new plant. That is, do not put it close to other plants you have for about one or two weeks. If you don’t and the product has any bacteria or fungus, it may end up spreading to your other plants.
3. Transfer it to Soil
If your crop is not pre-potted, then you would have to plant it in soil. Ensure the container you use is deep enough so that the roots will be properly covered.
If your plant is pre-potted, then do not be in a hurry to repot it. Simply wait for a while (one month is the recommended time) for the crop to get acclimatized to the new environment.
4. Water It
Your delivery most likely spent some couple of days or even weeks during shipment before it got to you. It would not have gotten any water during this period.
Hence, one treat you can give to it once it gets to you is water, plenty of it. You need to properly rehydrate it.
One way to do this is to place it under your faucet and allow the water to flow directly into the plant’s pot. We want to believe you’re using a pot that has drainage holes. If you aren’t, that is what you need.
Once you have enough water in the pot, keep it and allow the water to drain out through the drainage holes.
5. Wait Before Fertilizing
Just like with repotting, you have to wait for some time before you start fertilizing the plant. Most experts suggest that you wait for about three months before you start using fertilizers.
This is because most growers often use fertilizers when they grow the crops in their greenhouses. Fertilizer may be in the plant’s soil as well. So, if you start fertilizing it immediately, you may end up giving it way too much than it needs. Watch this video if you wish to learn how to fertilize plants in containers.
When it is over-fertilized, it may get burned; we believe you don’t want this. We know you can’t wait to give your latest addition to your garden or home the right nutrients to make it blossom and grow but wait for about 3 months. This is enough time for it to burn off all the fertilizer that has been used in the greenhouse.
Conclusion
Getting your plant delivered to you is very convenient. However, you need to know how to take care of the delivered crop if you want it to stay in great shape. Hence, in this article, we have discussed some of the most important things you need to do once your plant gets delivered to you.
