Magnolias
When it comes to desirable trees and shrubs, Magnolias top the list. They are almost universally loved. The fact that nurseries now sell most plants and trees online means that you can buy these beautiful plants almost regardless of where you live. For example, you can buy several types of Magnolia Trees from The Tree Center.
However, before you do so, it is very important to check whether your soil and climate are suitable for growing these beautiful trees. They are quite hardy, once established, but are particularly sensitive to frost. A good nursery will be able to help you to work out if they are actually suitable for your garden.
Creating a beautiful flowering hedge
If you want to create a bit more privacy in your garden, planting a hedge is a good way to do it. Using flowering shrubs is a great way of turning this living barrier into a spectacular feature.
There are numerous options available. Some require higher maintenance than the others. The Dwarf Crepe Myrtle is a particularly good choice. It can reach heights of 5 ft, which is plenty for creating a hedge that allows you and your neighbors some privacy without cutting you off completely from each other. Ninebark is another shrub that can also make a good hedge. This plant produces colored leaves at different points in the year as well as plenty of beautiful flowers.
Using trees and shrubs with colored leaves
If you do not necessarily want a hedge full of flowers, but still want a bit of color using red leaved shrubs is a good way to go. The Red Robin Photinia is particularly nice. As the leaves mature, they darken to green, producing a nice contrast.
Other plants like forsythia are colorful as well shaped in unusual ways. The forsythia has bright yellow leaves that are very striking. It is a deciduous plant, so it drops its leaves in the autumn. Something that you may need to bear in mind when deciding where to locate this plant.
There are plenty of very pretty ornamental trees that you can use to add interest as well as color. Among the nicest are Red Maple, Japanese maple trees and Red birch. If you fancy something really different the purple leaves of Bloodwood and Garnet trees are particularly striking.
