Hello World! Welcome Friends! If you’re a homeowner, you probably know that it entails a lot of great things coupled with a few bad ones, too. For instance, you are solely responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of your home and everything in it. That includes your AC system.
As you probably know, AC systems are not cheap, which means that proper maintenance is even more important than just keeping yourself cool this summer.
Thankfully, the simple maintenance and checkup that you can do at home is really simple and it doesn’t take a long time. For everything else, consult AC maintenance experts such as Allied Experts, who helped us come up with this article.
Clean or Replace the Filters Regularly
This is one you’ve probably heard a hundred times before – make sure your air filters are clean. And there’s a good reason for that. It is a very simple task, and it can have a huge impact on the quality of air in your house and the performance of your system.
Air filters are your first line of defense against a variety of micro particles, such as dust, allergens and pathogens. Make sure to clean or replace your filter as recommended by your system’s manufacturer.
See to the Cooling Coils
The cooling coils or the evaporator core is located in the indoor unit, near to where the fan is. These coils are made of metal (usually copper) and are excellent at what they do – heat exchange. This is where the hot air of your home is swapped with the cold air from the system.
Heat exchange coils are good at cooling down the air in your home, but they need to be clean as well – otherwise the dirt is lowering the cooling capacity of your device, making it work harder than it needs to – thus shortening its life span. Go in with a feather duster, as the thin metal fins of the heat exchanger are very sensitive to damage.
While you are at it, check the fins for damage. These fins look like a stack of paper, spaced a bit apart. If there is no space apart the heat exchange is not going to be optimal. However, if you do notice any damage, consult an expert and don’t try to fix it on your own. As mentioned before, they are very sensitive to damage.
The Outside Unit
Now that you have seen to your indoor unit, it is time to take care of the outside unit. These units are bigger, but also more robust and less prone to damage. When it comes to outdoor units, there are only a few things you need to be concerned with.
First, make sure that it is not dirty and full of dirt and debris. Just like the coils in your indoor unit, the outdoor unit works a lot better if it is clean and has an unobstructed access to airflow. That means cleaning out the leaves and dirt that might have fallen in there.
The other thing you need to do is make sure that there is nothing too close to the unit which might interfere with the airflow that the machine needs to run smoothly. This concerns particularly not putting anything on top of it. This will certainly make any malfunction less likely to occur.
If you notice any kind of a problem with your AC system, do not ignore it. Catching a malfunction while it is small and somewhat harmless can save you a lot of money compared to waiting until something major breaks.
Reach out to your local AC maintenance company and tell them about the behavior of your system that you think is problematic. If they identify it as a problem, they can recommend what your options are, or they can assure you that it is not a problem
In any case, keeping an eye on one of the most expensive devices in your home is a good idea, so take the time to do it right.
