Hello World! Welcome Friends! Bangkok is famous for many things, the spectacular Grand Palace, its many beautiful temples, world-class dining and shopping, exciting nightlife, and serene city parks, but did you know it is also home to an amazing number of sporting events?
If you were an entrepreneur investing in real estate in Bangkok you would be well advised on planning to build a golf course or a sports complex on it, because Bangkok loves its sports! Let’s take a look at just some of what’s going on in Bangkok and its surrounding wide world of sports!
Golf – Speaking of hitting a little white ball with a stick in a grassy field, the Bangkok area sometimes plays host to some major world golf tournaments and a bunch of regional tourneys including the Asian Tour. The Bangkok area’s golf courses are well kept and considered to be among the world’s finest as well as affordable, just ask all those groups of Japanese gentlemen carrying their golf bags through the airport!
Football – The beautiful game is beautifully represented by Thai Premier League Football, consisting of 14 teams with 8 of them calling the Bangkok area home. While not yet playing on the level of Europe’s powerhouse teams, the quality of play is quite high and well worth watching, and the enthusiasm of the wildly cheering local population in the stands is definitely contagious!
Tennis – If you were to fly low over Bangkok and look down you would see tennis court, house, tennis court, school, tennis court, shopping centre, tennis court, apartment building, tennis court- well, I think you get the idea! Tennis is insanely popular in the Land of Smiles, and there are plenty of places to play, many of them free to the public! The PTT Thailand Open is the big tennis event of the year, buy your tickets early!
Thai Boxing – Known locally as Muay Thai, this honoured and ancient uniquely Thai martial art garners the same kind of fanatical love and attention that the Japanese shower on their native sumo. For reasons that still remain a mystery (greed and corruption), the famed downtown Lumpini Stadium was forced to close down and move out into the weedy Bangkok outskirts of Ram Intra, but fear not, the place is hopping and bopping with boxing matches nearly every night of the week! This is a do not miss the spectacle of human physical combat!
Rugby – This rough and tumble all hands on team tussle has gained great popularity in Thailand, and the place to see it is at the Bangkok International Rugby Sevens Tournament in the fields near Patana. The stands are full of cheering crowds, and you can buy a pretty darn fine cheeseburger to go with your beer as you watch the matches! The local Thai clubs still have some work to do to be really competitive on the international level, the Thai Rugby Union is currently ranked at 60th in the standings, but they are climbing their way upward with great determination!
So, if you are a sports fan or love to play yourself, Bangkok is a great place to be!
