Hello World! Welcome Friends! It’s often said that someone’s home is their castle. And that idea might seem somewhat self-aggrandizing in a way. But in fact, it’s actually not giving your home nearly enough credit. A castle tends to be a rocky, cold, and uninviting place. To be sure, it does offer the same sense of safety which your home should mirror. But your home has a lot more going for it than any castle could hope for. The only problem is that people aren’t always utilizing that potential to its fullest.
One of the most common examples of this is the backyard. People often don’t give it much thought at all. And when they do, it’s usually more of an afterthought. It’s quite rare for someone to really stop and consider how it impacts the overall style of their home. And along with this, it’s equally rare for a homeowner to ask herself how the backyard works with and complements the rest of her home.
A backyard should work with the rest of the house
Working to get the most out of your backyard can do a lot for the home as a whole. One of the biggest selling points is that it essentially gives you a lot more space. A backyard that just serves to hold your kid’s toys isn’t really working as it should. There’s far more that you can do with it. And that reclaimed space of your backyard can be put to much better use. This is basically like getting free space for your home out of nowhere.
But, of course, this is a rather abstract look at things. There’s a larger question of how to make it work. The first step is to really define what it is you’re working with. You should measure things out and fence out the area. Suppliers like FDS Distributors can ensure this matches the style you’re looking for. Using composite materials as a fencing option is one of the more popular methods of setting things up in a way that’s compatible with many different styles.
Once you have a general idea of the space and how to set it apart from the rest of the world, you can move on to the next step. And that step involves generally clearing the backyard out in preparation for further use. This can entail a variety of different things depending on your exact situation.
But in general, it means you’ll want to remove almost everything from the backyard. And from there, you should try to keep the land as even as possible. Basically, get rid of all clutter and then give it a good mowing.
Taking the backyard to the next level
One of the biggest considerations is whether you’d like to add a vegetable garden. This isn’t just about supplementing your diet either. It’s often a conversation piece for the larger purpose of your backyard. And this purpose involves creating an area where your friends and family can socialize.
Consider what else to add
There’s a lot more to add than just a garden though. Again, that’s just one option among many. You should also consider things which might help promote conversation. Outdoor furniture is one of the items that’ll fit into most other choices.
People usually want chairs of some sort to sit on. But you could even consider something like swings. This might seem like it’s a bit childish at first. But keep in mind that your friends might have children. Adults often find them surprisingly entertaining, as well, when they give them a chance.
Likewise, a fire pit is a great way of recapturing some memories of youth. It’s all the comforting fun of a bonfire. But it’s all set within the comfort of your home. This also compliments an area set aside for a good BBQ. Though with both options, consider the general flow of foot traffic between them all. You’ll want to ensure that people can easily move from one area of the backyard to another.
But most of all, remember that space which has no use isn’t necessarily useless. Often times these open spaces provide atmosphere. And they can promote general conversation. This is also why setting out furniture is important. You should try to arrange things so that there’s set walking paths. This will promote conversation and strengthen the bonds among your guests.

Such a beautiful home inside and out! I hope one day I can have a back yard to enjoy. I currently have a large back yard but no privacy and the neighbors dogs constantly bark while we are out there. We are so ready to move .

We have a beautiful backyard that walks right out onto a beach for our lake but I really struggle with designing furniture seating that’s both practical for all the wet bums and yet stylish to go with the rest of our house.

I have to admit that our backyard space is less than stellar. Maybe some day we’ll get it all put together 🙂

I adore your garden – gosh what a dream! I am English and have a pretty garden full of trees, but there is no cohesion. I love the idea of having rooms outside! xx

I agree, the backyard should be just as wonderful to enjoy as the inside of your home. I love sitting outside on warm summer nights with a glass of wine and just enjoy the fresh air and relax for a brief moment while the kids play. Thank you for linking up with us at #OMHGWW and hope to see next week!

Kathryn what a great article! I love my garden and can often be found sitting on my swinging chair watching the birds. We’re actually in the process of deciding what to do with about a third of the garden as the children no longer need the space! This has jogged my memory to get it started!!! Your space looks great and I love your chairs 🙂 Thanks for sharing at Fiesta Friday.

You do have a gorgeous backyard retreat. And I do agree the backyard is as important as the rest of the house.
