Hello World! Welcome Friends! Days are getting shorter, and the weather is getting chillier, signifying the end of summer and the start of the colder season. That means that it’s time to start wearing jackets, drink hot tea, and, of course, prepare your garden for the cold. This is a crucial part of having a healthy and resilient garden since it takes time to see results. All the hard work and effort you put in now will show during the following spring. Autumn plays a vital role in what your plants will look like as the weather becomes warm again, as do the preparations for the winter snows and frosts.
If you’re relatively new to gardening and are not yet sure what steps you should take to help your garden thrive, here are some things you should keep in mind.
Remove Leaves
All the leaves that fall in your garden should be disposed of in your compost bin regularly. Although it might not seem like an essential step, failing to do this could cause the dead plant matter to smother the grass and everything you’ve planted. All the gathered compost can later be used as mulch in your garden beds.
If you want to get some flower pots for your plants, you can check the options at https://www.elho.com/en. There are several options and designs available. All are made sustainably so that your garden is entirely natural, and you don’t have to worry about having anything toxic or potentially dangerous next to your plants. Adding the mulch helps minimize water loss and maintains consistent temperatures even deeper in the soil. It can also prevent the development of pests in the earth that can cause harm to your plants.
Trimming and Pruning
Before winter rolls in, you should trim and prune all the plants and hedges to keep them compact right from the ground level. Pruning stimulates new growth, as the removal of each terminal bud allows the ones below to break. That means the plant is sturdier, more resilient and bushier. However, you must be careful when pruning, as being too extreme can cause you to harm and even kill the plant.
Don’t remove too much growth at one time. If a shrub or tree is considerably overgrown, it can be tempting to want to bring it into shape during a single pruning session, but that can cause problems for the plant’s root and branch system. Most trees benefit from pruning as the weather gets colder, so you should wait until late autumn or even mid-winter to trim your garden. The complete lack of leaves will also allow you to identify the branches that should be removed.
Planting
Autumn is planting season, as the weather creates the perfect conditions for fresh growth and development. If you want to ensure your plants thrive, get some outdoor planters. These garden additions don’t only look good but also serve to protect the plants from any damage. This arrangement also allows you to bring the plants inside for a while until they’re strong enough to be taken and planted outside, ensuring that the session is more successful and you’ll have a fuller garden.
Autumn is also the best time to start collecting seeds for the vegetables and flowers you’ll plant next year. If you haven’t already been doing that earlier in the year, this is the time when it becomes crucial to think about storage and preservation. Getting the harvest timing right is critical, whether you’re collecting wet or dry seeds. The first category applies to cucumbers, aubergines, tomatoes, melons and pumpkins. For the best results, the seeds should be harvested when the fruit is perfectly ripe. Stir the seeds in a jar with some water and let the mixture ferment until it sinks to the bottom. Then, let them dry on baking sheets or plates.
For beans and peas, the pods should be allowed to become completely brown and dry. An excellent way to tell that the seeds are ready for harvesting is if they’re rattling inside. Letting them in a dry place and allowing plenty of direct sunlight to get to them will speed up the process. For storage, you must leave the seeds in a cool and dry place. You can even place them in a tightly sealed glass container for the best results.
Soil Testing
Although this isn’t a necessary step, testing the soil will allow you to determine how likely your plants are to grow and thrive. Autumn is the best time to do this, and you can later think about what you can do to replenish nutrients in the soil. Several testing kits are available for purchase. They test pH levels, as well as the quantities of nitrogen, potash and phosphates. All are required to promote healthy plant growth.
They must also be within the proper levels since too much or too little of one can throw off the environment and create imbalances. Adding the required substances during the autumn months is beneficial because it allows the soil more time to adjust until the springtime. If necessary, you can conduct retests in the spring to amend the situation again.
Compost and Perennials
Adding compost during the autumn months is one of the critical ingredients for a successful garden during the following spring and autumn. Getting the compost layer in October or November gives it plenty of time to break down and become entirely usable. This way, your plants can get all the nutrients they require. Depending on whether you till the soil or not, you have to apply compost differently. If you don’t, you can simply add three or four inches of compost at the top of the soil, and if you do, you just have to use the tiller after spreading the compost on the garden soil.
There are some perennial vegetables that can be planted in the fall. Garlic is the most common one, and you can sow it around mid-October. Green and regular onions can similarly be planted in the fall, much like rhubarb, raspberries, chives, fruit trees and strawberries. Some of these shrubs and plants can also be successfully pruned during the autumn.
Having a garden takes considerable work and effort, and you must learn how to help yours thrive regardless of the season.
