Hello World! Welcome Friends! Not all gardens are alike. Some are steep, some stretch on for acres, and others need a great deal of renovative work to bring up to speed before we entertain in it. It’s always important to remember that a garden is part of Mother Nature, even if we’ve fenced it off and may have relaid the turf.
If you hope to entertain in this space, it’s healthy to consider what preparations you need to make to keep everyone safe and having a good time. For example, if your garden is very steep, then implementing retaining walls with “tiers” of your garden can allow a seating area, while also providing accessibility to children or the elderly in your family.
Now, we couldn’t possibly include every variant of garden design or your personal space in this post, but we can certainly outline a great deal of wisdom that helps you retrofit and apply such guidance to your own space. In this way, you’ll be sure to prepare your wonderful garden for the upcoming summer season.
With that in mind, please consider the following:
Combining Heating & Cooking
When we think about heating a garden, especially during the colder nights of the spring or autumn, many people think about heating vents or fireplaces. If they hope to cook, they might provide a larger grill that stands there during the summertime. This is fine of course. But what if space is at a premium, or you’re looking for a more natural and beautiful design for your rural garden to retain its character? A large chrome grill might not seem so natural in that space.
With a cast iron fire pit bowl, you can get the best of both worlds. Not only can this provide the flame-grill you’re looking for, but it serves as a hanging fire pit that remains easy to empty between uses, without messing up your garden or causing you to dedicate one area of space to a campfire for some time, damaging the grass around it. This is just one example of course, but it remains a great place to start.
Ambient Lighting Setup
It’s important to remember that while lighting can look beautiful and magical, especially at night, it also serves as a fantastic safety measure. From lining a garden path, lighting up the lower walls in your driveway, adding more visual contrast between steps when climbing up to your front door, or even providing that motion-sensitive lighting to enhance security at night (perfect if there are many nooks and crannies around the side of your property), you can use lighting to both protect and illuminate your home beautifully.
Having a switch linked up to several stages of lighting in your garden can also help you illuminate the space carefully, without shining into a neighbor’s window, but still accounting for the darkness of each night where appropriate.
DIY Garden Path Enhancements
You don’t need to spend thousands on a great garden path, but it is important to make sure it’s level and secure before you allow people to walk down it. Sometimes, using wooden blanks or thick beams can help you differentiate a path. In some cases, having a path professionally landscaped can weave a better zig-zag path to allow for accessibility up steep gardens too.
You might also implement a garden arch to provide a little shelter and privacy on this path, or light it with the aforementioned garden lights for that magical appeal. If you’ve noticed that the wooden chips you line the path with tend to blow away in the wind, you can compress the ground or simply unveil the hard dirt underneath depending on the soil quality and land characteristics you live on. Making adjustments and connecting this path to other areas, like your driveway, while keeping an eye out for loose stones and slabs is essential. This way, you can be certain no one will trip on your garden path, and that’s important, especially if you’re sharing a few drinks during your dinner party.
Bathroom Privacy
A bathroom is the room of the household in which we expect the most privacy. But if a garden is at an odd angle compared to your house, or has sight lines inside, you might need to plan the privacy a little more robustly.
Implementing adjustable blinds you can use to ensure no one sees in, especially when it’s dark outside and light inside, is key. You can also back those up with netted curtains, but make sure they’re washed regularly for hygiene reasons. This is one of those easy-to-forget considerations that we only notice when the issue becomes glaringly obvious. While you might not feel exposed when no one is in your garden due to helpful property sight lines, consider what it might be like with a dozen relatives or friends in the garden. That in itself can help you avoid making guests feel uncomfortable without meaning to.
Creative Seating Solutions
In an unconventional garden, not all regular seating necessities will be the same. If this is the case, it’s good to plan around those limits. For example, if you find that your garden is steep, you might lay benches against the retaining wall, and then place outdoor armchairs at either end, so that no one has their back to the steep decline behind them. This way you can improve safety, and install fencing that protects against any falls.
If you’re limited for space, you might use portable furniture you can easily move around in the garden, especially depending on where the water runoff is flowing during those wetter-than-usual but still warm nights. Of course, implementing furniture covers like tarpaulin sheets can help you protect furniture during the colder or wetter weather. Also, remember to consider the sun and where it might be shining during the day, the last thing you need is to seat people without a parasol of any kind and force them to shine shining light in their eyes.
With this advice, you’ll be certain to entertain well in your unconventional but still appealing garden, having everything needed for success.
