Hello World! Welcome Friends! As the summer season comes around the corner and you get all your summer wear and flip-flops out of the dusty box, looking forward to some sunshine outside and cool air indoors. But wait – the threat of no cool air coming out of your air-conditioner is looming. A thousand different thoughts start coming to your mind, you’re going crazy trying to figure out what the problem could be. Asking yourself, when was the last time you checked it or anyone checked it for that matter? You reach for your phone book and find the first repairman available. If you don’t get it fixed now, before the family finds out, you will be in trouble long before you can say ‘repair-man’.
If you have found yourself in a situation like this before, no need to worry. We have prepared a list of things that you can first check yourself that could go wrong with your AC and if all fails it is always best to call an expert who will be knowledgeable in this department (and doesn’t need a list) to do all these checks properly for you, so you (and your family) can sleep well at night!
An AC unit or Air Conditioning unit is possibly the most common and essential appliance in any home, especially in countries with hot climates such as some states in the U.S that can get up to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. It is also used in countries that have very harsh winters of minus degrees, to keep the home warm. It has both a heat pump and a cooling fan system. You can read more about how these units work here.
What Could Go Wrong?
The Thermostat Batteries Could Be Dead. A very common reason for an AC to stop working is that the batteries may be dead. As obvious as this sounds, with any appliance that uses batteries, it is something that has been overlooked many times. The simple solution to this one is to swap them with a new set. Don’t forget to adjust it back to the ‘cool’ setting once done.
The Fuse is Blown. We’re not talking about your ‘internal’ fuse, from the AC not working, but more to do with the fuse of the connector. If a fuse between your thermostat and AC is blown, you will need to replace it or have it done for you. Unless you are fully equipped at doing it yourself, best to make a phone call to the professional services to sort it out properly for you.
The Indoor (or Outdoor) Disconnect Switch May Be Off. Sometimes this can happen accidentally by someone either bumping into it by mistake. A normal occurrence in ACs that are installed in the garage or attic mostly. Check that this switch is turned to ‘on’, it could be just this one thing that is causing it not to work.
Also, while you’re at it, you could check the outdoor disconnect switch too. If you did not know this existed, now is your chance to check it out. Again, if it has been turned off, it could be several reasons.
A Blown Transformer. Your unit may have a bad contactor and this has been known to often lead to a blown transformer. It may not be the same as the blown fuse but in the end, this will stop your appliance from working as well. This will also need to be swapped for it to be fixed.
Check Your Breaker Box. Your circuit box is an important part of the whole appliance, so checking that this has not tripped due to overloading, could be a good idea. If you do switch it back on but it trips again, there is something that will need to be fixed beyond the board itself, and if you can’t find the solution to why it keeps doing this now would be a good time to call an expert, for instance, someone from an establishment such as Royal’s Heating & Air to diagnose the bigger issue.
A Dirty Filter. One of the most common problems in many households is a dirty filter. If you do not regularly change or clean the filters, there is a very big chance that it clogs up the AC vents thus restricting the flow of air in or out and this can lead to bigger problems in the long run. The airflow being blocked is not something you want to deal with.
Hopefully, these few reasons above give you some idea of what to look out for, but not to try and fix yourself. Calling a professional to fix issues such as these is advisable, so as not to worsen the situation and end up breaking your wallet.
