Hello World! Welcome Friends! If you’re a homeowner, you know that sometimes life can be overwhelming. There’s so much to do that it’s hard to stay on top of everything and keep things organized. If a door knob breaks off or falls off, it can create an even bigger mess for someone who is already busy trying to take care of their house. The good news is that replacing a door knob is actually very easy.
Gather Your Tools
Before you begin, have a screwdriver, hammer, and drill on hand. You will also need a screwdriver bit for the screws that hold your door knob in place. If you don’t have one of these tools or bits, look around your house for something that can substitute one. A pair of pliers could work as well.
Once you’ve gathered all your necessary tools, it’s time to get started changing out your old door knob for a new one.
Remove the Door Knob
Step one is to remove the screws that hold the door knob in place. You can use a screwdriver for this, but ensure checking that they’re not loose before you begin removing them.
Once you’ve removed all of the screws, take off the old door knob handle and set it aside. Next, grab your new door knob and carefully line up its screws with where they need to go so it will fit on easily when you’re done. Put in two screws at a time until they are all in place. Finally, replace any remaining parts of your old door knob with those from your new one (this includes a strike plate if needed). Now, make sure everything is secure before putting on a doorknob cover or reinstalling any decorative hardware if applicable.
Get the Existing Hardware Out of the Way
The next step is to remove the old hardware. There will be screws holding it in place, so you’ll want to take them out before moving on. If any of these screws are damaged, use a screw extractor tool to remove them (you can find this at any hardware store). Be sure not to damage your door while removing the old hardware!
Put On Your New Hardware
This can be done by using either a screwdriver or a hammer if the piece is particularly stubborn. (If you’re using this method, we recommend taking off your watch and jewelry first.)
Once both pieces are attached, test them by turning them. If they move smoothly and easily, you’re ready to move on.
Replace the Exterior Knob
After you’ve removed the interior door knob, it’s time to put in the new one. You’ll want to line up the notches on the exterior knob with their corresponding holes in your door before pushing it through. Once all of your hardware has been put into place, test out your new doorknob by turning it from left to right and listening for any loose noises or rattles. Finally, re-install your lock by screwing in a few screws from outside of the room.
Once you’re happy with how everything looks and feels, ensure both locks are secure before using them for longer periods (like when moving out).
Replace the Interior Knob and Test It Out
Now that you’ve got the new doorknob in place, it’s time to test it out before you put everything back together. Make sure everything is aligned, and then give it a good tug. If the door doesn’t open or close freely, you might need to adjust its position on your door frame.
Once your new knob has been installed and tested, all that remains is putting everything back together.
Conclusion
Once you’re done, it’s important to test out your new door knob. This will ensure that everything works properly and give you peace of mind that your doors are secure whether you’re using a keyless system or a keyed one. If there are any issues, head back over to step 1 and try again.
