Hello World! Welcome Friends! Scales can be used to measure the weight of an object or objects and they’re used in many areas of our everyday lives. Head over to www.1800scales.com for a selection of examples! If you’re looking for a new set of scales yourself, this is a great place to start looking.
There is a wide range of scales that suit a variety of different purposes, so whatever it is that you need to weigh, there will be a set of scales that you can use to measure its weight. But how do you know which ones you should be looking at? That’s what we’re here for.
We’ve put together a guide to the different types of scales and their uses. We’ve kept it short and sweet, so whether you’re baking or packing for vacation, you can weigh what you need.

Analytical Balance
To start us off with a science-y set of scales, analytical balance scales are often used in labs.
They work by having an object placed onto a plate that sits on top of a unit that reads the mass and reports its weight in imperial units like ounces or pounds, depending on the user’s preference.
The machine balances the gravity acting upon the resting plate by working out what force it needs to keep the plate from moving.
Bathroom Scale
There are still a few analog bathroom scales around these days, but the majority are now digital which offers accurate readings and more reliable performance.
Beyond that, bathroom scales are difficult to sum up with a uniform statement due to the huge variety of design options available depending on what make and model you go for.
They’re generally used for people to weigh themselves either in the morning or before they take a shower, which can help people track their progress on their fitness journey.
Counting Scale
Ever wanted to save yourself some time by counting multiple identical objects all at once instead of individually? That’s exactly what counting scales are used for.
All you would need to do is weigh just one of the items to get the individual weight, then you can weigh them collectively and divide the total weight by the individual weight which will leave you with the number of objects you have in your collection.
Crane Scale
For larger, more heavy-duty jobs, crane scales are capable of reading up to 5,000 pounds (2,270 kg) which is roughly the average weight of a standard motor vehicle. Not only that, but they can do it while being suspended in the air attached to a crane.
They’re quite small and compact, despite their impressive strength, which means they’re ideal if you’re short on floor space. They also make it much easier to get an accurate weight reading for awkwardly shaped objects.
Microbalance
At the opposite end of the scale (pun intended) are microbalance scales, which can weigh even the smallest of objects with a value of 1 microgram or more.
To put this into perspective, that is one-billionth of a kilogram, therefore it’s mainly used by chemists, pharmacologists, microbiologists, and other science sectors rather than for general use around the home.
Postal Scale
There are two main types of postal scales, which are mechanical and digital. The latter is more expensive, but it has a wider range of features to offer and can connect to the internet.
Just as the name suggests, a postal scale is used by postal services to weigh various pieces of mail and parcels to determine how much the postage rate will be. They can also be useful to big businesses and companies who would, otherwise, waste time and money by using their local Post Office where you could end up waiting and being overcharged for postage.
Vehicle Scale
Another type of weighing scales with a purpose that you should be able to work out from the name alone is vehicle scales, which are – surprise, surprise – designed to weigh all kinds of vehicles, from regular automobiles to large, industrial size vehicles.
They’re not necessarily something everyone will personally come across on a regular basis, but you may have seen the signs signalling a “weigh station ahead” on interstate highways.
If you’re the driver of a large vehicle you’ll likely have encountered one yourself, as they’re used to check whether vehicles are adhering to the weight regulations on certain roads where there is a limit to help reduce the chance of damage.
