Hello World! Welcome Friends! Plants are the greatest decoration one can have in the house. They are diverse, good for health (unless you have allergies), and can even substitute some beauty products, medicine, and food for your pet. Many plants are a good source of vitamins for home birds or turtles. They also enliven the space and are capable of reducing stress levels, so using some in your dorm room decor would be a perfect choice.
However, many plants and flowers are high maintenance. It is not nice to see your plant dying because you forgot about watering it for a couple of days or put it an inch away from the window. It is easy to forget about plant care, especially if you are a student.
Take, for instance, a typical week at university. You are probably hectic, failing deadlines thinking ‘I need to give my write my paper assignment to WritePaper as soon as possible’, and exhausted. Students do not always manage to care about themselves in such conditions, let alone plants.
So, the middle ground would be to pick up the least demanding plants that will still be a visual treat. Read on to find the best options!
Sansevieria
It is also known as jinn’s tongue or snake plant. Sansevieria leaves come in different shapes, patterns, and shades from calm Hunter green to vibrant Sacramento green. The most popular species are:
- Sansevieria trifasciata;
- Sansevieria gracilis;
- Sansevieria trifasciata Laurentii.
Although they can fade when under too much direct sunlight, bright light won’t hurt them. So, it is not whimsical. It is also good at filtering air indoors and removing toxins from it.
In general, snake plants are widespread in regions with an arid climate. You do not need to water them too much. Even in the Summer, Sansevieria will be okay if you do not water it for several weeks. Meanwhile, overwatering – especially if droplets fall in the plant’s rosette or stay on leaves – is undesirable. It may lead to the rotting and inevitable death of your green friend.
Chlorophytum
Also known as spider plant, Chlorophytum is perfect if you want to decorate your room with a less rigid-looking plant. Its leaves grow at a fast rate, so you may have to repot the little spiderettes that begin their life as Chlorophytum flowers. The process can also help you reduce the stress accumulated during a hard day. Or, you can simply give them away.
The plant does not require much sunlight, and it is better to keep it away from direct light. Otherwise, there is not a lot of caring routine. Also, in contrast to the majority of plants that should be watered as soon as the top layer of the soil becomes dry, spider plants can stay without water for several days more.
Asparagus Fern
In contrast to other demanding ferns, this one requires minimum effort. Actually, it is not really a fern – that is the whole trick. The only thing to take care of is frequent watering. This plant does not demand much light, but putting it away in a dark corner is not the best choice as well. So, if you can keep this balance, this fern’s bright leaves will look good to your eye. At its best times, even flowers and berries can pop up on the leaves!
Rubber Fig
It is one of the least problematic species of the Ficus genus. Rubber fig does not require much sunlight and its leaves pop up frequently and slowly. So, you can observe the way a leaf appears in the shape of a small arrow and then unwraps and thickens, thus becoming more vibrant. Such observations can also calm your mind and distract you from unpleasant things.
All you need to know about it in terms of plant care is that if you water it once a week in summer and once in 10-14 days when it is cold outside, it will be totally okay. Just mind that cold water won’t do any good for the plant.
Krantz Aloe
These guys grow quite fast. Just like jinn’s tongue, they do not accept watering their leaves and are okay with rather dark corners. If you simply need one nice flower pot with a low-maintenance plant and do not want to even repot it, Krantz Aloe will be perfect. If you water it once a week in the Summer and once in two weeks during Winter, it will be in perfect shape. However, it will also forgive you if you forget about it for three weeks.
Despite the fast growth, you may not have to repot it since the gel from leaves is good for facial masks, as a moisturizer, and sometimes, even as medicine. So, whenever you see that the plant has grown leaves that are thick and big enough, cut them away with a clean knife and have a spa day!
Swiss-Cheese Plant
The plant received this name due to the holes in the leaves appearing as the plant ages. Also known as Monstera adansonii, it does not need direct light but prefers sunny areas in the room. So, if it is dark in your room most of the day, it is better to choose another species. A good drainage system will let you know when the plant has enough water, and the rule of the dry top layer of soil is also applicable!
Jade Plant
The lucky or money plant has thick leaves and a trunk where it stores the accumulated water. Some of the species can even bloom. Jade plants live for more than 2 years but only provided they have enough sunlight. They need to be watered every 2-3 weeks, but the period can change based on the season. Use the rule of dry soil mentioned above.
Cacti
This point is the obvious one since cacti are the least demanding indoor plants you can find out there. To make sure they please your eye, you can buy different species and place them together in a composition. Some of the prettiest ones are:
- fairy castle;
- feather cactus;
- jumping cactus (be careful around it, it has very soft but sticky thorns);
- Christmas cactus;
- bishop’s cap;
- Moon cactus, etc.
The Takeaway
As you can see, there are quite a few options of low-effort plants that will freshen up your dorm room, won’t steal your precious time, and can even be a treat for your pet or used as medicine. Moreover, there are many species of several plants mentioned above. So, even one genus can compose a greenish motley crew and create a perfect mood in your room.
Just do not forget that overwatering is almost never good unless you have a whimsical fern. Too much water will probably lead to spoiled leaves and rotten roots, and there will be no way back. Meanwhile, if you purchase the plants above, the risk of losing one of them due to hectic life will be minimal.
