Hello World! Welcome Friends! A clogged toilet might be every homeowner’s worst nightmare. No matter how many times you flush the toilet, the stubborn clog simply won’t go away. A clogged toilet isn’t just a minor inconvenience though. It poses a hygiene risk in your bathroom if you don’t have this issue fixed right away.
Of course, calling a plumber is the most immediate solution to a clogged toilet. However, some homeowners also like to roll up their sleeves and tackle the clogged toilet by themselves. Unfortunately, plungers on their own aren’t always enough to remove blockages from your toilet. Fortunately, there are other home remedies that can make unclogging your toilet a much easier process.
Check out these home remedies that you can use to unclog your toilet:
1. Dish Soap
One of the easiest remedies you can try for a clogged toilet is by using dish soap to break down the clog. Adding dish soap to your toilet helps to lubricate the blocked pipe, allowing debris to pass through with ease. Add about a half cup of dish soap and wait 30 to 45 minutes.
Sometimes the clog will dislodge, and your toilet will flush by itself. Other times, you’ll need to use a plunger to clear the debris from the newly lubricated pipes. If you don’t have liquid dish soap, you can also chop a bar of soap into pieces and let them dissolve in the toilet.
2. Hot Water
Hot water is another easy way to remove a clog in a toilet. Simply adding hot water to your toilet can help dislodge the clog with force and temperature. Adding hot water works even better after you’ve added dish soap and allowed it to soak into your pipes.
If you turn off the water supply to your toilet, you can lower the water level enough to pour in a significant amount of hot water. Lowering the water level will allow you to pour in a lot of hot water at once, which is the best way to use this home remedy.
3. Baking Soda and Vinegar
Vinegar and baking soda are a classic combination for cleaning things around the home. This classic home remedy may also come in handy if you’re dealing with a clogged toilet. Add one cup of baking soda to your toilet, followed by two cups of vinegar.
Once the reaction starts, allow it to sit for 30 to 45 minutes. If the toilet is still clogged after, repeat the process followed by a hot water flush. For minor to moderate clogs, baking soda and vinegar is an easy and natural way to fix your toilet.
4. Drain Snake
A drain snake or drain auger is a tool you can use to physically break up clogs in your toilet. You can make a homemade version of a drain snake by using a traditional wire hanger. Simply unravel the hanger until you have a long straight piece of metal.
You can use this makeshift drain snake to push into your toilet and break up stubborn clogs. This is an effective technique to use in combination with baking soda and vinegar to ensure the clog is completely flushed out.
5. Coke
You might be surprised to see something edible on this list, but a bottle of Coke is among the most effective home remedies for clogged toilet. All cola products are highly acidic, which helps them eat through clogs and break down mineral deposits.
If you want to give this a try, pour an entire bottle of Coke into the drain and let it sit overnight. The next morning, you can do a hot water flush and test if the clog is still there. The water flush afterwards is important to prevent the cola from eating away at your pipes.
6. Water and Ammonia
Another combination you can try to clear a clogged toilet is water and ammonia. Before using ammonia, make sure your bathroom has adequate ventilation. Open a window if possible and never use ammonia with the door closed. It’s also a good idea to wear an appropriate respirator mask and gloves to prevent any possible damage from the ammonia.
You can combine 1 cup ammonia with some water and let it sit in the toilet for 30 to 45 minutes. After letting the ammonia and water mixture sit, do a hot water flush to clear everything from your drain.
7. Bleach
Bleach is another powerful cleaner you can use to dissolve a clog in your toilet. Pour 3 to 4 cups of bleach into your toilet and let it sit for 20 minutes. Turning off the water supply to your toilet will help the bleach lubricate the drainpipe. Bleach is an extremely strong chemical, so it’s important to ensure your bathroom is ventilated.
8. Bath Bomb
Surprisingly, bath bombs are a useful tool you can use to help break down clogs in your toilet. Bath bombs contain a variety of home cleaning ingredients, including baking soda, Epsom salts, and citric acid. Throw one into your clogged toilet and wait for the reaction to start. Let the bath bomb sit for 20 minutes before flushing the toilet with hot water.
