Hello World! Welcome Friends! Some homeowners don’t realize the number of aspects that go into keeping a house in good, stable condition.
Things such as the roof over your head are vitally important but often go unnoticed to the untrained eye. In fact, you’d be surprised at how many people don’t even consider it when touring a house for purchase.
That roof is in charge of keeping you comfortable inside the house and keeping unwanted elements outside where they belong.
Trying to become more knowledgeable on this topic than others? Here are several roofing facts you may not have known. After reading these, you’ll never look at your roof the same way again.
1. Different Regions, Different Roofs
Those that travel often may have noticed this, but there are certain roofing types that are much more predominant in certain regions. In fact, outside of those regions, you may not see that roofing style at all.
This is because of the way the roof’s slope and deals with the elements at hand. Take Arizona, for example. Because it’s in a dryer climate with far less rain, you’ll see that most buildings have flat roofs.
Meanwhile, buildings in a tropical climate, such as Tampa all have roofs with a certain slope degree, to help with rain and prevent water from collecting on the roof.
As we all know, water puddles on the roof lead to unwanted water leaks over time.
2. En-Lightening You on Metal Roofs
It’s common knowledge that metal objects sticking up from the ground can act as potential lightning rods. They tend to attract more lightning to them.
Because of that, many people assume that a metal roof leads to more lightning striking it than other roof types. The fact is, they’re no more susceptible to being struck by lightning than other roofs.
As a matter of fact, they would be better at safely distributing the energy from the lightning strike than other types. That’s a tremendous factor in protecting everything and everyone inside the building.
3. Flat Roofs Aren’t Actually Flat
To put a legitimately a flat roof on your building, or any other building for that matter would be a complete disaster. It would promise that the roof would eventually cave in on itself from the pressure of its pooling water.
Rather, the term “flat roof” is applied to any roof that has a slope of 1/4 inch per foot or less.
Trusted roofing companies will be glad to fill you in on the specifications that you’ll need for your roof to achieve optimal production and longevity.
4. Modern Metal Roofs Aren’t Noisy
Metal roofs get a bad wrap because of their previous generations’ wrongdoing. Since the metal roofs of old were noisy from things like rain and wind, people assume that to still be true.
Not true at all. Metal roofs have actually advanced so much that they tend to prevent more noise, even during serious weather conditions.
Granted, there are several other things to consider other than the “noise factor”, but it’s worth noting that metal roofs can now be trusted to protect from unwanted noise. Now you have several noteworthy options available to you.
5. Covering Your Previous Roof Isn’t a Fix
In the sport of saving money on what might be an expensive roofing repair, many people think they can save money by simply covering the old roof with a new one.
However, in the long run, you’re actually causing yourself more money. Covering the old roof will lead to many other problems.
First off, by adding another roof over your current one, you’re doubling the weight of your roof that your home has to support. Not to mention that the problems and conditions of the old roof won’t be resolved, they’ll worsen.
It’s better to set aside the time and money to replace the roof now than to cover it over with a new roof, then have to remove both the old and new roof down the line.
6. You Can Grow Vegetables on Certain Roofs
Did you know that there are roofs that can be used to grow vegetables and other forms of plantation on them?
Yes, they’re called “living roofs” or “green roofs” (depending on who you ask) and they are all the rage these days.
Not only will this help you save on your grocery bill by growing your own produce, but it will also benefit the environment around you. What makes a better combination than that?
7. You Can Have Your Roof Cleaned
Not many people realize all of the upkeep and care that goes into having a roof last as long as it can.
To do that, there are such companies as professional roofing cleaners and they provide a tremendous service to you.
In fact, they can clean your roof in a way that others can’t. They have special cleaning methods and solutions to provide maintenance that’s both effective and environmentally-friendly.
More importantly, they have different cleaning methods for whatever roof type you have. Rather than clean it yourself, leave it in the capable hands of someone with the experience and know-how to clean it right.
