Hello World! Welcome Friends! Maintaining a clean kitchen is so important for preventing food contamination and pests. Most of us regularly keep on top of the basics such as washing dishes, wiping countertops and cleaning the floor. However, other spots in our kitchen can sometimes get overlooked. Below are just a few of the common overlooked dirty spots in kitchens and why you should regularly clean them.
The Shelves of Your Fridge
Crumbs and spillages in your refrigerator could be breeding bacteria – which could contaminate your food. Make sure to regularly wipe down shelves with a cloth. To thoroughly clean your fridge, take out all of the shelves to make sure that there are no hidden food debris.
The Grills in Your Oven
When was the last time you cleaned your oven? While bacteria isn’t likely to survive in your oven, cleaning your oven regularly is still recommended in order to reduce the risk of a fire. Spillages of grease and grime can catch alight if you are not careful. You can deep clean your oven yourself or you can hire someone to do it for you. This should be done every 3 months. It’s worth noting that some ovens are self-cleaning and may not need such regular cleaning.
The Inside of Your Toaster
Crumbs can gather at the bottom of your toaster over time, which can also become a fire risk. In fact, crummy toasters are one of the most common causes of kitchen fires. After several uses, make sure to unplug your toaster and give the inside a good clean. A toothbrush is a good tool for getting out all those burnt crumbs.
The U-Bend in Your Sink
Sink u-bends can become clogged with food over time. If you’ve noticed bad smells coming from your sink plughole or water is draining very slowly, it could be time to clean out the u-bend to prevent an inevitable future blockage. Some people call a plumber to do this, but you can unclog your sink u-bend yourself using online guides.
The Space Behind Appliances
Many of us never clean behind our kitchen appliances. These can often end up becoming hidden dirty spots where mold can grow unnoticed or pests may breed. Every few months, move out your appliances and mop and wipe behind them. If you notice droppings, it could be a sign that rodents are living here and you may want to call a rodent control service. Any serious mold should meanwhile be cleaned while wearing a mask. Some appliances such as dishwashers and ovens are difficult to move and may require the help of an expert.
The Tops of Cabinets
Build-ups of dust and mold can also form on top of cabinets if not regularly cleaned. Consider taking out a ladder and occasionally checking the top surfaces of your kitchen cabinets. It may be a simple case of wiping them with a cloth.
The Top of the Fan Hood
If you have a fan hood over your oven, you should also regularly check that this isn’t gathering a layer of dust. Such dust could end up falling into your food while you cook if it starts to get thick. Run over it occasionally with a cloth to get rid of any dust.
