Hello World! Welcome Friends! Fitting a bigger bed in your room might seem impossible when you have only a few centimeters to play with here and there, but you can do it with savvy furniture choices and a little light building work to free up space.
The trick is to get a divan/ottoman base with no protruding parts, so your mattress dimensions are what cover the floor. Banishing the bulk goes a long way to ensuring you can fit a king where a double bed once was.
Read on as we provide nifty tricks to fit a bigger bed.
1. Get a Divan Base
One of the easiest ways to maximize bed size in a small space is to opt for a divan base. Unlike bulky bed frames, divan bases are precisely the exact dimensions of the mattress itself. This means they take up less width and length in the bedroom.
Some king-size divan bases are marginally wider than a standard double bed, giving you extra sleeping space without eating into the precious floor area.

2. Configure the Drawer Layout to Suit Your Bedroom
When picking a divan bed with storage drawers, your layout can make all the difference based on your room’s shape.
If your bedroom is square, go for drawers on both sides – it’ll maximize the storage space. But for a rectangular room, foot-end drawers are best, so they don’t stick out and block pathways. And if you need to keep the bed low, check out “Conti” style shallow drawers that tuck under the mattress nice and tight.
Take some measurements and play around with different configurations before committing to get the perfect divan for your bedroom.
3. Get an Ottoman Bed for Hidden Storage
For maximum integrated storage, ottoman beds are the ultimate space-saving solution. The entire base lifts to reveal cavernous storage inside – much more than regular divans offer. Just be aware that ottoman beds come at a higher cost.

Choose an ottoman bed with adequate internal storage depth for your stuff and get a side lift or end lift configuration to suit your bedroom.
4. Free Up Space Behind the Headboard
With some minor building work, like removing the skirting board directly behind the headboard, you can gain a few valuable centimeters behind the bed to fit a larger one.
Relocating electrical sockets higher up or onto a different wall will also free space, giving you around 3cm of additional space.
5. Get a Slimline Headboard
Chunky padded headboards that protrude out from the wall are space guzzlers. Look for slimmer styles around 5cm thick that lie flat against the wall.
Avoid headboards with lips or corners that push the bed frame away from the wall. The sleeker the headboard, the more inches you save.
6. Free Up Floor Space With Slimline Furniture
The amount of floor space that furniture takes up can restrict how big a bed you can fit in a small bedroom. Bulky chests of drawers and wardrobes with chunky protruding handles and doors require ample clearance space. Choose tall, slimline versions of bedroom furniture instead, such as narrow towers with minimal clearance gaps.
You can also look for items with handles recessed into the units. The more streamlined your additional furniture, the better this will make the space look bigger. Clever positioning of slimline furniture is also critical for maximizing bed size in a small bedroom.
7. Move Bedside Tables Onto the Wall
Bedside tables hog floor space and make you compromise on bed width, so why not reclaim the space by moving them onto the wall instead?
Wall-mounted shelves and floating bedside tables with hidden power sockets create clutter-free access that doesn’t impede your bed. You can even install units that flip up and down to make even better use of your space. Another benefit to wall-mounted bedside tables is you can add side drawers to your new bed without clearance issues.
