Hello World! Welcome Friends! For a homeowner, using natural means to kill weeds in the lawn is better than using chemicals. Pesticides can find their way into nearby water bodies when you spray them in windy conditions. They may even come into contact with human skin and cause serious side effects. In case you still want to use weed killing products, you should know what is the best weed killer first. You may just try out the natural ways of killing weeds. Some may cost you some money, but most of them will just require you to use stuff that you already have at home. Keep reading.
Old-Fashioned Pulling Still Works Wonders
It is hard, it requires you to get your hands dirty, but it works and it has always worked. Roll up your sleeves and get to pulling the weeds out. It can be hard though if the ground is hard and it has not rained recently. But you can always water the ground some, make it mushy-mushy and then pull out the weed. If the roots of some of the weeds are too deep, just use a knife or a screwdriver to dig them out. Pulling out weeds will also do you some good. You have to bend over and apply some force to pull. It will help you exercise your core muscles.
Use Salt To Kill The Weeds
Salt has been many things to different people over a long time. It has been used for millennia as a preservative and many centuries ago, it was used as a medium of exchange. Now, we use it to enhance food’s taste but according to home gardening experts, there is more to salt than meets the eye. You can use it to kill weeds. Just place a big pinch of salt at the base of the weeds when you know it is going to rain, and just leave it there. You may also water it in gently. It will kill the roots of the weed.
Spray Vinegar Onto The Weeds
Vinegar will kill just about anything that it touches. So, as you apply it on the weeds in your garden, make sure you are very careful with it. Direct the spray at the weeds alone, do not let it get to other plants. You should only apply vinegar when there is no rain in the forecast as water will make it quite dilute and not as potent as you would like it to be.
Use Baking Soda
You will use baking soda the same way that you can use salt. Wait until the ground is moist enough after rain. You also have to get a small brush because you will have to apply the baking soda on all parts of the weeds. This can take some time if you have many weeds, but perhaps you combine it with other ways like pulling. It works, it is natural and it is selective meaning you will not do any harm to the good plants. You should know various other uses of baking soda.
Scalding The Weeds Is A Real Killer
Just boil water and pour it over the weeds, as simple as that. If you do not like using your clean water, just use what you are left with after boiling corn or potatoes. If it has some salt, it will kill the weeds faster. Just make sure you pour enough hot water over the weeds to kill the roots. Hot water will kill almost everything if it is poured when hot enough.
Burn The Weeds
There are many flame weeding tools in the gardening stores. Just be careful with the fire so that it does not get to other plants. You have to decide though whether there are useful plants in the lawn because if they are too close to the weeds, you may burn them. After killing the weeds with fire, you can wait a few weeks and repeat the process if new leaves start sprouting from the roots.
Use Landscape Fabric And Mulch
Get a landscape fabric, lay it between rows of your plants and then top it up with mulch. This denies the weeds underneath any oxygen or moisture, thus leading to their death. The best thing with this method is that it does not only kill the sprouted weeds, but it also prevents new ones from sprouting. It is a most cost effective way of controlling weeds. Just deny them access to factors like sunlight and they wilt and die.
