Hello World! Welcome Friends! Keeping your home running smoothly isn’t always easy. In fact, it can be downright challenging, especially if you’re new to owning a property and don’t have a landlord taking care of all that stuff for you.
The trick here is to adopt a regular maintenance schedule. Getting work out of the way quickly can help you relax and enjoy more of your home without worrying about it falling apart at the seams.
Vacuum the Carpets
While it might sound like a basic task you should be doing anyway, regularly vacuuming your carpets is an excellent way to keep them in good condition. Removing particles from the surface prevents them from getting trodden, protecting fabric fibers and preventing them from looking frayed or damaged over time.
Clean the Gutters
Another basic task is cleaning the gutters. You want to ensure they are free from leaves and debris that could prevent them from draining the roof properly.
Gutter cleaning is usually something that only takes a few minutes and a ladder. Put on some gloves and scoop the debris out. Alternatively, use a ground-based gutter vacuum system to suck twigs and leaves from high-up gutters you don’t want to access on a ladder.
Check Your Air Conditioning Unit
In the summer, it also pays to check your central air installation unit to ensure it is functioning properly. Getting it serviced in late spring can sweep away some of the winter cobwebs and ensure it functions properly all day long once the warmer weather hits.
Shut off Your Hose Bibs In the Fall
Because of cooler temperatures, it’s also a good idea to shut off your hose bibs during the autumn months to prevent your pipes from freezing and causing damage. If you leave water in the system, it could crack your exterior fittings, leaving them vulnerable to the elements.
Look For Signs of Leaks in Your Bathroom
Another pro tip is to look for signs of leaks in your bathroom. Watch for any issues with sinks, toilets, and water heaters. Correct any leaks rapidly to prevent them from spiraling into more severe issues later on.
Clean Out Your Dryer Vent
While it might be an annoying task, you also want to clean out your dryer vent from time to time. After a while, it tends to accumulate lint from clothing, which can block the extraction pipe, preventing the machine from working as efficiently. Simply putting your hand in and removing any material can make a difference. It can also reduce the risk of fires significantly.
Test Your Smoke Detectors
Lastly, you’ll want to check your smoke detectors to ensure you’re protecting yourself in the event of a fire. Replacing the batteries ensures they continue to go off as you expect.
At the same time, you also want to check your carbon monoxide detector. You can usually find these close to your central heating unit (the appliance in your home that is most likely to leak the gas). Test the battery and replace it if you can’t remember the last time you changed it.
