Hello World! Welcome Friends! Once a homeowner is able to afford new natural stone countertops, it is important to keep them looking good so they last longer. Stone countertops add value and beauty to any home, but they require a certain amount of care to stay looking their best. Sometimes, no matter how careful the homeowner is, problems develop that must be corrected. There are seven common countertop problems, and each has the correct solution.
What Are 7 Countertop Problems?
Granite Countertops and other stone countertops are very durable when they are taken proper care of. But, problems need to be taken care of as soon as they are discovered for the best results.
- Countertops can have ruptures or holes or cracks that develop because of poor installation, bad joints, being installed on an uneven base, or the counter carrying too much weight. The solution will depend on the underlying cause. These ruptures can be repaired with adhesive, filler, or other treatments suggested by the manufacturer. The filler should match the stone surface so it does not show.
- Cracks on the countertop near an appliance located on the countertop mean there is not enough support under the counter to hold that appliance. Adding support will be more difficult than if that support had been in place while the countertop was being installed. Remove the heavy appliance or add support under the countertop.
- Countertops become water damaged. This should have been addressed with a vapor barrier applied during installation. But, sealing the countertop can help prevent further damage. Making sure that the sink and dishwasher are properly installed can also help reduce the water damage. The laminate worktops will provide you with the best finish and the damages will be reduced compared to others.
- Granite countertops with chemical stains or a dull finish can be caused by harsh cleaners not meant for use with stone countertops. The homeowner can fix stone countertops with a dulled finish by hiring a professional from a granite countertop supplier to buff the surface back to a shine. Then, use only mild soap and water or a granite countertop cleaner to keep counters clean and retain their shine.
- Stains on the stone countertop from hot dishes or pans should be avoided by using trivets or hot pads to keep the heat off countertops. Start by cleaning the burned area well, then use a restoration method that is right for the type of countertop. Some things to try are baking soda and water or toothpaste. Contacting a granite countertop supplier will yield more advice or help.
- Chemicals or mineral build up in the water can also cause spots on stone countertops. To remove this buildup or water stain safely, use a soft brush and a gentle cleanser, steel wool pads, or a poultice made for granite countertops and left on overnight.
- Scratches and chips can happen on granite and stone countertops even though they are strong and durable. Repair strategies depend on the countertop material. For granite countertops, the homeowner can mix an epoxy resin with color pigment and apply it to the damaged area. Apply the resin slightly higher than the level of the countertop, then remove the extra with a razor blade and sand the repair. Finally, apply a granite polish and buff. Protect the surrounding area of the countertop during the repair.
Call a Professional
If the homeowner is worried about their ability to repair the countertop damage or if that damage is extensive, call in a professional countertop person. A repair will cost less than a new countertop.
