Hello World! Welcome Friends! Many of you might already be aware of climate change. For others who are still toddling behind, you should know that torrential rains, extreme heatwaves, floods, and wildfires are all the ripple effects of climate change. Climate change did not happen overnight; it resulted from years of inconsiderate human activities with unheeded impacts on the environment, which brought about drastic changes in the climate.
But all is not lost yet; climate change is still reversible. You can make amends by taking the right steps to inculcate green habits in your daily lives. Some of you might already realize the importance of sustainability and going green. For others who don’t know where to start, here are some changes you can make in your lifestyle for eco-friendly living. Once you walk this road, it won’t be long before you realize that not only is this a healthy way of living, but it can also save major expenses.
1. Power your Homes with Renewable Energy
Start stepping in the right direction by shifting to renewable energy resources. The electricity you use at home is produced by conventional sources such as fossil fuels. These fossil fuels, such as coal, cause immense pollution in the form of greenhouse gas emissions. But ironically, most of our electricity today is produced by burning coal. So, if you want to power your house from an eco-friendly source, go for solar energy. Solar is the most practical and convenient source of energy. For residential use, the solar panel size depends on your energy consumption. If you have a big house, you may have to go for multiple panels. The installation cost might be a little expensive. Still, once you are through installing these panels, you have a free source of electricity in your home.
2. Turn Off Electrical Appliances When No Longer in Use
Minor changes in the house can also make a huge difference. Most of these depend on you being more careful. Switch on electrical appliances only when you’re using them and use only as much as you need; for instance, there is no need for two lights in the house when one is enough. You can also use lights that reduce your electricity bill and cause less damage to the environment. One option is using lights with LED technology. They cut the emissions from power plants as they require less electricity.
3. Use Biodegradable, Decomposable, and Eco-Friendly Materials
Millions of trees are chopped every year to make toilet paper. This deforestation has severe detrimental impacts on the environment, such as increased flooding and soil erosion. So, what’s the solution?
Bamboo is a highly eco-friendly and biodegradable material available naturally. Preferring bamboo toilet paper can save millions of trees from getting chopped.. An average person uses 100 rolls in a year. Therefore, using toilet paper made from tree logs is simply an act of unkindness to the environment. Other readily available bamboo-based products are toothbrushes, combs, cutlery, and straws.
4. Switch to Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products
It’s a simple practice for most of us to visit the supermarket and pick up our favorite chemical-based fast action cleaners for bathrooms or other areas. However, we fail to realize that these cleaning agents and detergents contain ingredients that cause environmental damage.
Some of the plant-derived ingredients used in detergents and cleaning products are destroying forests. Manufacturing these ingredients requires cutting down forests to grow commercial crops. Derivates from these crops are then used in these detergents. One such commercial crop is oil palm. A simple way to make your lifestyle green is to prioritize green cleaners that do not contain these harmful ingredients.
5. Go For Residential Composting
Several things in your house might look unusable but can be used to preserve nature. This process is called residential composting. Dedicate a composting bin in your home and put all the waste material such as eggshells, vegetable and fruit peels, etc., to compost in the house. This practice will reduce waste, while the resultant natural product can be used as natural compost for your flower beds. Hence, you can get rid of the trash while fertilizing the soil in your garden.
6. Buy What you Need Only
More often than not, your shopping baskets might contain either a variant of what you already have or something you want to hoard for the future. Buying in bulk might be good in certain conditions, such as before a stormy season or a forecast of consecutive rains. But in normal conditions, it leads to overconsumption, which is detrimental to the environment. It leads to more waste accumulation and pollution, negatively impacting the environment. So it is only wise to buy what is necessary and in limited quantities.
7. Start Recycling to Avoid Overflowing the Landfills
Recycling is a way to reduce stress on the earth. It reduces pollution and saves energy. Recycling also means lesser or no use of new material to manufacture new ones. Nowadays, plastic is recycled to make new garments using less energy and other resources. Hence, it is diverted from incinerators and landfills. If this plastic goes to incinerators, it will cause a massive release of greenhouse gases.
So, you can keep a recycling bin in your house and put all the recyclable things such as plastic bottles, glass bottles, and clothes into it. Several states and cities are also establishing collection centers where you can send recyclable household items and play your part in protecting the environment.
Conclusion
Climate changes are a strong indicator that going green is vital. Our careless and unthoughtful habits are the most significant contributors to climate change and environmental damage. Shifting to eco-friendly products and making minor changes in your lifestyle will simultaneously benefit the environment and our savings account. Adopting habits such as buying what you need, recycling, reusing, and conserving energy can contribute immensely to a cleaner, greener environment.
