Hello World! Welcome Friends! Your home’s backyard serves many purposes, from playing with your kids to entertaining friends and family. Over the years, it may begin to need refreshing. Here are six ways you can upgrade your backyard.
1. Refurbish Decks and Patios
Weathering causes damage to the outdoor areas of your home. It is most noticeable on your decks and patios. Wind, rain and ice wear down the wood of your deck and cause concrete patios to crack. To make these areas look new again, you can power wash your deck or sand it and restain. Some wood may be beyond repair, which is an ideal time to consider installing a long-lasting composite decking product. Cracks in the patio are repairable with material available at a local hardware store. You can also paint and stamp concrete to make it more appealing.
2. Repair the Fence
Just as the deck gets weathered, so does your fence. Walk along your fence line and inspect each plank. Sometimes nails get loose, or boards crack and need replacing. If large sections require repair, consider installing a new fence made out of long-lasting materials. If it is in good condition but a little drab to look at, hang planters, lights or decorations on it. You can also paint sections of different patterns or paint a mural to provide an artistic flair.
3. Replace Plants
Greenery is the heart of your backyard oasis. Start by pruning back overgrown trees and shrubs. Pull up any dead plants and trees and replace them with ones that grow best in your gardening zone. Knowing what plants thrive in your climate keeps your yard looking its best all year long. For added appeal, plant an herb or vegetable garden for homegrown produce.
4. Design a Sitting Area
To make your backyard more inviting to guests and dinner parties, add a pergola or gazebo. These create a great place for sitting or eating, providing shade from the sun, and protecting from the weather. You can hang netting fabric from them to give the guests a bug-free eating area. Search the internet for different styles and options more like this.
5. Create a Fire Pit
You can buy a stand-alone pit or design an in-ground one yourself. Fire pits provide a warm place to gather with friends. They are also fun for kids to make smores or roast hot dogs. No matter what type you decide on, keep a fire extinguisher or water source available for emergencies.
6. Add a Water Feature
Fountains, waterfalls and ponds provide tranquility to your yard. They are fun to look at and give off a pleasant and relaxing sound. They also offer a safe water source for birds and other animals.
Updating your backyard gives you a relaxing place to enjoy the outdoors. When you have a nice yard, you can entertain friends and family, have dinners outside with your kids, and offer a safe place for wildlife. Since most of these projects you can do yourself on the weekend, there’s no reason not to start right away.
