Hello World! Welcome Friends! Small rooms don’t need to feel tiny and cramped. With the right techniques, it’s easy to make a small room appear a lot larger, more spacious, and more comfortable. Many of these techniques are easy to apply and don’t require a lot but can have a huge impact on how the room looks. Check out these 6 tips to help you make a small room appear larger.
Hang Shelves Higher
While floor-to-ceiling bookshelves might be nice to have, they can make the room look smaller. Instead, take advantage of vertical space to hang bookshelves a little higher. Buzzfeed.com recommends hanging them near the ceiling as this helps to draw the eye upward and provides the illusion of a taller room.
Try Using Stripes
Stripes are great at making things look taller or longer. Striped carpets provide a lengthier look to the floors, making the room seem a lot bigger than it actually is. If your goal is to make the room look taller, try adding stripes to the walls. Play around with different colors, thicknesses, and more to create a unique look that really works well to enhance your space.
Paint a Mural on One Wall
Murals can add a lot to the impact a room has when someone walks in. They can be incredibly complicated or simple and can be used around the entire room or just on a focus wall. Try lighter colors to make the room look airy and light or paint a mural on the ceiling to make the room look taller. You can paint your own mural or shop WallpaperInk.co.uk to find one that fits the room perfectly.
Leave Windows Uncovered
Oversized curtains can block the natural light and take up a lot of space, making the room seem even smaller. Instead, forego the curtains or choose sheer curtains that are smaller and won’t block the light. Open windows let in a lot more natural light, which helps the room feel airy and bright. The more light you have coming in, the bigger the room might feel.
Choose Smaller Furniture
While an overstuffed sofa might look a lot more comfortable, it’s going to make the room look a lot smaller because it visually takes up more space. According to remodelista.com, if you choose a sleeker sofa, even if it’s about the same size, it’s going to look like it takes up much less room and will help your room look more open. They also suggest using something like artwork or a mirror for a statement piece in the room that can save floor space by hanging on the wall.
Add Mirrors
Instead of photos throughout the room, add in a few mirrors. It doesn’t really matter what the shape or size is for the mirror. They’re going to help reflect light throughout the room to help give it more of an open look and they add quite a bit of depth to the room to help it look bigger.
A small room doesn’t need to look small. Use the tips here in your home to easily make your rooms look much bigger and to give the illusion you have more space.

Happy New Year to you, Kathryn! Love this post as we are looking at a house right now and it has smaller main rooms than what we had in California. The current furniture in the house is smaller and I will have to rethink bringing my sofas… Love how you’ve decorated the living room (or the photo that you shared)!
Hope you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas,
Hugs and blessings,
Barb 🙂
