Hello World! Welcome Friends! If you’ve ever explored the home décor side of social media sites like Instagram and Pinterest, there’s a good chance you’ve compared your own home to those online and felt like what you have is wholly inadequate, mostly because it’s likely a lot smaller than what you’re looking at on the internet.
Not everyone can have a massive living space with endless amounts of storage and copious amounts of furniture – but that doesn’t mean your home needs to look cluttered or overly busy. You might struggle the most with your living room, especially if it’s small, but there are a number of hacks you can implement to save space and make the room more livable and even adding modern styled entertainment centers.
Here are six savvy and easy ways you can save space in your living room and make it appear bigger and more spacious.
1. Invest in Floating Furniture
One of the easiest ways you can save space is to invest in floating furniture. This will lift items off the floor and create more storage space underneath. For example, a floating TV stand will lift your television off the floor and allow it to sit higher up, freeing up space underneath for either additional storage baskets, or simply to be left open. TV stands can look bulky due to their wide nature, making your living room look and feel more cramped.
By creating space underneath a piece of furniture, it opens up the area and creates the illusion of a bigger room through freeing up actual floorspace. The same goes for shelves and side-tables.
2. Buy Two-In-One Furniture
Where possible, buy two-in-one furniture. This will reduce the need for more items within the room, therefore freeing up vital space and allowing you to better work the room. Examples of two-in-one living room furniture include sofas with built in storage compartments, similar to beds of the same nature. You can also purchase ottomans with internalized storage, perfect for film collections, books, magazines, and seasonal décor.
Console tables are a great replacement for bulky coffee tables and the like because you have a top layer ideal for placing lamps, candles, and the like, but they also have drawers underneath where you can store other items like remote controls, coasters, and odds and sods.
3. Reserve Décor for the Walls Only
Rather than cluttering up every available surface with ornaments, try and stick to placing décor on the walls only. There may be photos and small pots that you want on display, and that’s fine, but try and keep it to a minimum. The more items you have taking up valuable space on surfaces around your living room, the busier and smaller it will look.
Add color and vibrancy through wall art, or choose to add knickknacks on floating shelves rather than at a seated level.
4. Don’t Have a Floor Lamp
Floor lamps are statement pieces and they look great, but in small rooms, they take up precious space and, much like ornaments, can make a space feel overly cramped and busy. If you don’t have the room for a floor lamp, choose a hanging light instead. You can create the same level of ambience without having to take up floor or wall space, further opening up your living room.
5. Stick to Bright Colors
Whilst the color of paint you choose won’t actually save you space, it will determine how big the room looks. Darker colors can make a room feel cozy but small, so if your living room is already on the cramped side, try and open up the space by sticking to bright, neutral shades. You can always inject pops of color through things like cushions and blankets, or even statement sofa colors.
6. Make Use of Under-Furniture Gaps
The final savvy hack we have is to make use of gaps under furniture. For example, if you are struggling for storage for things like throw blankets, look at storing them under the sofa. They likely won’t be seen, but they’ll be out the way and easily accessible.
Hopefully these tips will help you make the most of your small living room and make it feel bigger, brighter, and airier!
