Hello World! Welcome Friends! Please welcome Aurora McCausland to the blog tonight! One of the biggest pitfalls of renting an apartment, is that you don’t have creative control over it. If you decide that your living room would look better if it was painted a light shade of blue, you can’t go buy a bucket of paint and reinvent the room. Or if you did, your landlord would have grounds to at the very least, heavily fine you. Chances are, somewhere in your contract, it states that you can’t do anything to permanently alter or change your rental unit. In some cases, you can, and it doesn’t hurt to contact your landlord and ask them what the policy is and see if you’d be allowed to paint, or do whatever it is that you want to your apartment. In cases where you absolutely aren’t allowed to change your apartment, but you want to give it more personality and make it feel like home, here are a few renter friendly ways to decorate your apartment.
Temporary wallpaper
So, you can’t paint. Which means you absolutely should not apply wallpaper, as incorrectly applying wallpaper can permanently damage walls, and your landlord would be pretty unhappy about that. But what you can do, is apply temporary wallpaper. Removable wallpaper has a sticky adhesive on the backside, allowing you to place it on the wall, and when you’re done and ready to move out, you can just pull it down. It won’t damage the wall or leave any sort of substance behind. It’s a great alternative to painting that will take less time, and is 100% removable.
Tension hooks
Hanging curtains, as well as gallery walls, and basically anything else that would normally require you to drill a hole or nail into the wall, is generally frowned upon in a rented space. Enter tension hooks and reusable command strips. These allow you to hang whatever your heart desires, without the messy consequences of a wall filled with holes.
Textiles
A bit of texture will do absolute wonders to transform a room. Add curtains, pillows, blankets, or even a rug, to instantly make a room seem more interesting. Think of them as accessories for your room. Just a few touches of fabric around the room will make it seem more homey and welcoming and a bit more you.
Express yourself with your furniture
So you can’t paint. But you know what you can do? Buy that red couch you’ve had your eye on. Accent with brightly colored pillows, instead. Find a way to bring the color into a room without the need to paint. If you have furniture made out of wood, you can also paint this or add a new coat of wood stain to it.
Add a bit of green
Living plants are an easy way to add life, in the most literal sense, to any room. Not only are they elegant, trendy, and beautiful, but adding plants into your home decor will improve your quality of life. No, really. Filling your home with plants is proven to increase the levels of oxygen in your home, giving you cleaner air to breathe, and improves the energy levels within your home. Do you need a single other reason to take a visit to your local plant nursery and pick up a few new plant babies?
Familiarize yourself with spackle
Sometimes, mistakes happen. Even if it’s not decor related, the chances of you stumbling in the dark and ending up with a hole in your entryway wall is pretty high. Luckily, spackle is easy to use and inexpensive to get. As long as the hole is minimal and wouldn’t require drywalling in order to repair and still be structurally sound, spackle over any holes that you make in your time in your rental unit. You’ll have to paint over this spackle, so make sure that you have the right color of paint on hand before you get started repairing nail holes.
