Hello World! Welcome Friends! An air conditioner is one of the most enjoyable pleasures of modern life, but nothing can be more frustrating than an AC that malfunctions. Though an HVAC specialist should be the only one to handle critical repairs in such cases, there are a few easy fixes you can try before calling a professional.
Here are 6 common air conditioning problems and repairs to ensure that no one in your home sweats during heat waves.
1. Decreased Air Flow
One of the main reasons for decreased airflow is the dirty, dusty filters. There’s often no need for professional help to repair dirty filters, unless they need a thorough clean-up. However, before going to a hardware store, be certain of the filter size that you will need. Also, check all intake vents in your home for filters, as in certain cases, there can be over one filter.
2. Compressor Not Getting Adequate Airflow
The external compressor of central air conditioning systems requires sufficient airflow to function perfectly. So ensure that a minimum of 2-3 feet space is available between any structure and the compressor. Additionally, you should keep a distance of 5 feet between the unit’s top and any structure above it.
3. Vibrating Window AC
From the noise of the air conditioner’s compressor cycling off and on, to the buzzing of its fan, window ACs make some sound. Such noises are natural. But besides these sounds, if you get a vibrating sound, it can indicate that the installation of the device is wrong. Refer to the instructions in the manual to check the right way to attach the AC to the window.
4. Dirty Ducts
One of the key components of ducted air conditioning systems is airways or ducts, through which air enters the vents to cool your house. When you avoid cleaning the ducts, debris can accumulate over time, causing the AC’s ducts to clog. Dirty ducts reduce the cooling capacity of the air conditioner, so it is necessary to clean the ducts once every 6 months. Even after cleaning the ducts, if your air conditioner still does not cool as expected, check the ductwork for leaks by an HVAC professional.
5. Check Window AC’s Seals
If your window air conditioner is not performing at its best, you need to inspect whether the surrounding seals are in order. If there is no proper seal, hot air may get in and cold air may leak out. To ensure optimal performance of a window AC, using weather-stripping along the unit’s perimeter would be a good idea.
6. Burnt Capacitor
The capacitor of an air conditioner plays the role of an energy storage device to start the AC. If your AC unit faces problems while starting up, it is probably an electrical problem and you might have to replace the capacitor. You can attempt to replace it if you have the technical knowledge, but this is something best left to a professional.
Do not forget to take the unit’s warranty into account when troubleshooting your AC. Besides routine maintenance, such as filter replacement or duct cleaning, you will need the attention of HVAC specialists for complex repairs to avoid the risk of voiding of the warranty
