It is pretty much a universal truth that trucks do not get as good gas mileage as cars. The size of the vehicles makes this more or less inevitable. However, there are still ways you can get better mileage out of your truck if you’re set on doing that.
Often, making some aftermarket adjustments by purchasing commercial truck parts is a way to get better mileage. However, that is far from your only option. Let’s talk about some of the specific adjustments you might make or driver behaviors that can help you in this area.
Maintenance Matters
First, if you’re concerned with your truck’s mileage, then you will want to take care of all the recommended basic maintenance associated with that particular vehicle. Your fuel economy is impacted by how well your transmission is working, the quality of your brakes, and the tire pressure.
You can keep an eye on all of these things. Don’t just wait for the truck’s annual maintenance. Watching videos that tell you how to make sure all of these components are performing at their optimal levels should serve you well if you’re not knowledgeable in the automotive niche yet.
Try a Lower-Viscocity Oil
Your oil pump’s efficiency matters. Specifically, if you have a thicker oil, that increases the load on the pump. This directly impacts your truck’s mileage.
In the winter is when you will notice a real difference in this area. A thicker oil plus cold weather will almost always decrease your gas mileage.
Combat this by using a lighter oil. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when choosing one, though.
Lighten Your Load
If you lighten the loads when you’re either hauling or towing, this should get you better mileage. This might sound obvious, but it might surprise you how many truck owners are hauling items around that they don’t need.
Look in your truck’s bed. Do you really need everything that is in there at the moment, or are there some items left over from a previous project that you’ve forgotten about?
If there are, then remove them. Anything you can do to lighten the load you’re hauling around should positively impact your mileage.
Try to Plan Ahead Whenever Possible
It’s also helpful to make fewer trips if you want to get better mileage out of your truck. Can you combine any of your trips?
If so, then do that. If you can hit both the grocery store and hardware store at one time instead of making two separate runs, that will get you better mileage efficiency.
Don’t Idle
You should also try to avoid idling in your truck whenever you can. Idling burns gas and accomplishes nothing.
You may have no choice but to idle if you’re sitting in traffic, but if you’re in a traffic jam, consider turning off the engine. Also, don’t go through drive-throughs. Instead, park the vehicle and go inside to pick up your order.
The combination of all of these things should improve your mileage woes significantly.
