Hello World! Welcome Friends! After cooking up a storm in the kitchen, you might discover that you have more food than you know what to do with. Or you might have items of food in the refrigerator that you won’t be able to eat before the sell-by date runs out.
What do you do about these foods?
Well, many of us throw them out with the trash, but we really shouldn’t, as food waste can produce harmful greenhouse gases. Some of us tend to flush our leftover foods down the sink too, especially those softer items, such as yogurts and soups. However, this is a bad idea, especially when trying to avoid drain clogs, as we would then be reliant on plumbing services to fix the problem.
There are better ways to dispose of our leftover foods, and these include the following.
#1: Donate your Leftover Food
Be it foods you have prepared yourself or foods that are nearing their use-by dates, consider giving them away to others. There could be a homeless shelter near you, for example, or any other worthy cause that accepts food donations, so be charitable and give your food to those people who could use a meal. Alternatively, think about your neighbors. Do you know people who could benefit from a food donation? If so, deliver a food parcel to them.
#2: Create Some New Dishes
For those foods that are almost past their prime, or for any scraps that are leftover after cooking, consider reusing them by getting creative in the kitchen. Visit Save The Food for leftover food recipes, and turn those foods you were going to discard into something tasty.
#3: Freeze your Leftover Foods
If you have cooked way too much, and you have no hope of eating everything in one day, fear not! Freeze them in portion sizes and consume them later in the week. This is one way to save time when you have a busy schedule, because if you already have prepared foods on standby, you won’t need to spend a lot of time in the kitchen preparing extra meals.
#4: Add your Foods to the Compost
Do you have a garden? If so, you will be keen to enrich your soil for growing purposes, so it makes sense to create compost. Lots of household items can be added to your compost, including paper napkins and eggshells, and there are plenty of foods you can add as well. Fruit, vegetable scraps, cooked pasta, and stale cereals are just some of those food items that can be added to your compost pile. Check out this list of compost items for some other ideas.
#5: Invite People Over for Dinner
If you can’t eat everything yourself, invite people over for dinner. Be it friends, family members, or your neighbors, invite them to your home, and share what you have made with them. Not only will you get rid of your excess foods this way, but you will also benefit from the social company of others.
So, don’t throw your food away, and don’t be tempted to empty any of it down your sink! Use our suggestions instead, as you will care for the environment this way, and you will experience other benefits as a result!
