Hello World! Welcome Friends! In all likelihood, your first instinct when you need a pair of jeans, some new pillow cases or a valance to hang above the kitchen sink is to run to the department store and load up a cart. Stop to think for just a minute about reviving your sewing skills and making some of those items yourself, all you need is quality machine embroidery threads and your sewing machine. Sewing used to be seen as a way to practice thrift. That may still be the case, but a handcrafted item can hold a lot more meaning.
Home Décor
Every fabric item you see in your home is sewn by someone, so why not make your own. Quilting can be a fascinating and rewarding hobby or even a lucrative business. For something simpler, sew up some linen toss pillows or hem the edges of a length of chenille to make a throw for your sofa. If straight hemming is your forte, visit one of the fabric stores Long Beach CA offers and choose a few yards of decorative fabric to dress up your living room windows or run up a couple of fun tablecloths.
Kids Clothing
Sewing on knits is easy with a ballpoint needle on your machine. Adjust the tension so that the fabric does not pucker while sewing. Cotton jersey is versatile, comes in many colors and works for either boys or girls. T-shirts are easy to sew and the most difficult part (insetting the ribbed neck) is still relatively easy. Denim is another great fabric to work with and in addition to jeans, you can sew up some shorts, a skirt or even some kind of little book bag.
Gifts for Family and Friends
Try your hand at a special handcrafted gift for a friend. Chef’s aprons or vintage-look ruffled aprons take only an hour and paired with coordinating set of towels or hot pads, make thoughtful birthday or bridal shower gifts. Whip up a tote bag with coordinating lining and pockets, and a grosgrain ribbon handle. Place a potted flower and a pair of garden gloves inside for a memorable gift.
Mending
If you are not keen on taking up sewing items from scratch, at least learn some basic mending skills. Sewing on a button, repairing a loose hem or fixing a hole in an underarm seam may not sound like much, but if you can do those things, you will save clothing from going unused, or worse – in the trash can.
Home sewing is fast becoming a lost art. Keep it alive and well by using it to spruce up your home or wardrobe
