Hello World! Welcome Friends! Foundation issues in your house can happen at any time. Most often, these can be spotted when you are having a home inspected before buying, so you’ll be able to factor it into the costs when moving. Sometimes though, foundation issues start to become apparent at a later date.
Here are five warning signs that you have foundation issues!
Cracks
One of the first and most likely to be spotted when it comes to foundation issues in the home are cracks in the floor or the wall. The cracks aren’t always a sign of serious foundation issues, though.
For example, cracks that appear near doors or window frames can be from a regular seasonal expansion of the wood and drywall. Smaller cracks are usually cosmetic and can be handled with some pain or caulk.
A stair crack looks like a stair and will be seen along bricks – these will need to be inspected quickly because they are a culprit for sagging ceilings and bowing walls.
Smells
Basements often smell a little musty if they are used for storage and not regularly used. But there is a smell that is closer to damp, mildew, and mould. Mildew and mould can grow quickly in the corners and anywhere that moisture is seeping.
While they can be cleaned off with a bleach and water mix, a repair is going to be a must.
Bowed Walls
Often when walls start to bow, it isn’t noticeable, but over time bowed walls can become prominent – not only that, but it is a sign that your home’s foundations are moving.
You might notice blistered walls instead and consider just painting or papering over them because it could indicate either water damage or heat damage. While it is less serious, having the walls checked anyway is a good idea.
Chimney
If you have recently looked up your roof and noticed that it looks a little wonky, this is a sign of foundation issues. The issue with a chimney that is slanting is that it is a serious threat to your safety as it can collapse completely. The chimney will need to be immediately stabilized, and the foundations will need to be repaired too.
Is a Foundation Repair Necessary?
A foundation repair is essential because it will prevent some of the natural movement that happens in the house. Houses ‘settle’ over time, and they shift, and that shift causes the foundations of the house to break and crack.
Calling a company that has extensive experience, like RS Foundation, means you can have your foundation issues inspected and repaired and have some future proofing done too.
If you choose not to have your foundation issues fixed, your home will be more susceptible to jamming doors, sagging floors, bowed walls, mould, cracks in the walls and water damage. No matter how small the cracks or the issues are, getting your foundations inspected and repaired keeps your home safe.
