Hello World! Welcome Friends! As the temperatures start to rise and summer is around the corner, pet parents’ thoughts turn to how to keep their four-legged friends safe in the warmer weather. Your role as a pet owner is crucial in ensuring their safety. There is a significant risk of heat stroke for pets when the mercury rises, and your knowledge and actions on how best to care for your pet when it’s hot outside can help you to help them avoid the dangers of summer.
Here are some essential tips for caring for your pet this summer, ensuring their health and well-being in the heat.
Eliminate Mosquitos
Mosquitoes can carry many diseases that are harmful to both humans and pets if bitten. From the West Nile and ZIKA viruses for humans and heartworm for dogs, contracting anything from mosquito bites can put both your health and that of your pet in danger. It’s crucial to take immediate action and call in Mosquito Control to help you remove any mosquitos that are in your yard and are stopping you from going outside or potentially harming your pet.
Heat Check
Always check the floor outside before taking your pup for a walk when it gets really hot. Place your hand on the ground in the sun, palm down to check for the temperature of the ground. If you can’t leave your palm on the floor for longer than 5 seconds, your dog should not be walking on it unless they have protective shoes. When too hot, the ground can burn paws and cause blisters and pain, and no one wants this for their dog. Always check before going outside to make sure it’s safe.
No Dogs In Cars
Every year, thousands of dogs die due to being left in hot cars by owners. Your dog doesn’t need it everywhere with you, especially when it’s hot and you’re running errands. It is much safer for you to leave them at home. Even with the AC on the windows open and a good water supply, your dog can overheat in a car as temperatures inside can rise quickly and drastically, making it too hot. Always think carefully about taking your dog out in a car on a hot day, as this can cause heat stroke, which can be fatal for dogs.
Use Cooling Products
Use pet-specific cooling products to cool your pet down if it gets too hot. These products, such as cooling vests, bandanas, towels, and mats, are designed to effectively cool your pet. They are ideal for your pup to wear to keep cool. Dogs, when hot, need to place their belly on a cold surface to cool down, and using cooling products that target that area, like mats or vests, can be instrumental in cooling them faster. Alternatively, use cool water in shaded areas to let them splash in and cool down.
Shade is Safe
It’s always better to be safe than sorry, and if you’re worried about things getting too hot, then always direct your dog to shaded areas both inside the house and out. Close the blinds or window dressings to block out the sun, pop up parasols in the yard for them to relax under and provide UV-blocking tents or covers to help them enjoy the outdoors without having to be in direct sunlight.
Knowing the signs of heatstroke in pets and how to keep your dog cool in the summer can help you avoid your dog being too uncomfortable or succumbing to heatstroke. Heat stroke is particularly a concern for young pups, older dogs, and those who have health conditions or are overweight. These tips can help you keep your pets safe this summer.
